2025 Land Cruiser "Base"
Anybody else hearing a loud shrieking noise coming from under the vehicle towards the rear frequently about 3 minutes after parking and shutting down, and occasionally again about 5 minutes later? I’ve had people 50 feet away in a parking lot turn and look startled, like what the hell was that noise. Seems to happen more often on hot days. Attached mp3 audio file started after first under the hood thump and whine noises I've always heard, normally about 60 and 90 second after shutting down, and shrieking noise at 1 minute 28 seconds (don't know how to edit out the earlier part). Very annoying.

The "barking" noise from a Land Cruiser 250 a few minutes after shutting off the engine is likely the evaporative emissions control (EVAP) system undergoing a self-test. The noise is often a clicking, buzzing, or rumbling from the EVAP system's vent valve or vacuum pump as it checks for fuel evaporation leaks, a completely normal process that usually lasts for about five minutes.

What is Happening?

  • Evaporative Emissions Control (EVAP) System:
After you turn off the engine, the EVAP system performs a self-test to check for any leaks in the fuel system and ensures it's functioning correctly.
  • Sounds of the Test:
This process involves components like the vent valve and vacuum pump operating, which can create a series of clicking or buzzing sounds that might be described as "barking".
  • Harmless Operation:
For most vehicles, including Toyota Land Cruisers, this is a completely normal and expected function of the vehicle's emissions system, not a sign of a problem.

Welcome to the asylum.

I have never heard that noise from MIss Daisy.. but I will pay attention moving forward.

Spent some time under it waiting and listening. Hard to find with all the stuff bouncing sounds around from multiple sources it turns out, but definitely coming from the electric parking brake actuators. I can feel them vibrating when they make the noise. Sometimes one or the other, sometimes both simultaneously or a fraction of a second apart. Does it with or without automatic parking brake system engaged. Hardly think it's normal, and the installed actuator part number has already been replaced with a newer version, might have something to do with it. Back to the dealer we go.
