RPM randomly going high

I would start by disclaimer "Ignore my ignorance as this is the first high-tech vehicle I have owned in 23 years"
so basically what I have noticed (since now I am paying attention to it), when I am coming to a stop light and expecting the engine to turn off and go into battery mode sometimes I see that the engine does not turn off but the RPM instead of going down fluctuates and sometime goes up (1K RPM to 1.5K RPM) while I am decreasing my speed constantly. Why is that? My old car when I brake, the RPM goes down with the speed not up. Does the transmission work differently with these new cars?

Hi SuperNova, I think the excess energy is thus dissipated by going high rpm at braking. I love the latest and highest technology built into our Cruisers. You have to love this pinnacle of technology. No one on the planet earth is ahead of Toyota. Toyota has more dedicated engineers than other car makers.
