People buying this size of car won’t care about power too much. The Suzuki Jimny comes with a 1.4L engine and a 0.65L 3 cylinder turbo.

This will indeed be a rocket ship in comparison…

I am so confused by the product positioing. Is this meant to be a better offroader than the LC250? As I understrand it, the LC300 is mainly for on-roading type user, with a little bit of offroading.

The LC250 is for the 50% offroad and 50% on-road type user (balanced used).

The LC70 (not sold in the US) is hardcore, 70% offroad and 30% on road.

Where does this one sit?

As others have stated, and in line with my prediction, this isn’t a direct competitor to anything in the states/NA markets. It likely will never see our shores. This is a direct competitor to the Suzuki that dominates the compact SUV off-roader market in many countries.

I’d stop looking at the old logic of how things are placed within Toyota’s lineup, and more how the different vehicles target existing demographics. Everyone looks at the 4R and LC and wonder why two vehicles are sold with the same underpinnings, but they fail to see that they target two different competitive groups of consumers. The vast majority of people looking at this aren’t looking at the 250, and vice versa. This being an LC group of actual enthusiasts is where that distinction is less solid, but these groups makeup only a small part of LC consumers.

Personally, I don’t think this thing warrants the LC nameplate. I am not Toyota though, and they are the largest car maker out there. My opinion means nothing at all.

Long Live the Nissan Cube!

I had a Cube as a long term rental (3 months) when I was stationed out of area. Used it for grocery runs and the weekly 3-5 hour drive home. Every time I walked up to it I hated it. By the time I got done with a 3 hour drive in it I parked, turned it off, looked at all the stuff I could put in it, thought about the good MPG, the good ergonomics, and thought..."this isn't so bad".

Then I got out, looked at it again, and beat myself up to take my own lunch money and tell myself your mama jokes about my own mother.

This FJ gives me the same vibe. The more I look the less I like it.

IMHO they should have taken family styling cues from the 250 and built an entirely new vehicle that didn't look like a mini 250, but made you instantly think, "that really reminds me of a 250", OR made a short wheelbase 250 just like Series and Defender Land Rovers. Either way, the second row doors kill it for me right off the bat.

It isn’t meant to compete with the landcruisers, it exists as a counter to the ever popular Suzuki Jimny.

The real question will be how this is positioned compared to the Fortuner.

Lack of full time 4WD is a real shame though.

This is still a big car. Jimmy is a whole different class. A proper match would meant a two door Land Cruiser, not FJ.

It’s a little bigger than a 5-door Jimny, but they are squarely in the same market segment. The Jimny will likely be a slightly better off-roader and the FJ slightly more upscale, but it’s too soon to say with certainty.

It’s just a tiny bit bigger than the 3 door 150 Prado.

And it is still a lot smaller than the Fortuner, MUX, Pajero Sport and anything else on the market, except the SWB defender which will cost twice as much and is a totally different market segment anyway.

As much as I like this little thing, it definitely lacks the "seriousness" of previous Land Cruisers and their focus on humanitarian and remote area operations. Even their naming (FJ = Freedom & Joy) is antithetical to that.
