I recently tried this and yes the RPMs suddenly shoot up since you are essentially downshifting and it does eliminate the highway cruise drone

With your droning complaint I’d absolutely swap to a stock system. Make your family happy.

Your current system your unhappy with is a Toyota cat-back tuned high flow system with a smaller muffler & without a resonator.
Going back to stock exhaust it will have a larger more restrictive muffler & a rear resonator. Big difference in controlling sound & tone.
Resonators are added by manufacturers to tune their muffler using a chamber in the rear to tune out some tones & frequency in the exhaust system.
An exhaust drone is a frequency being transferred to the vehicle, & can be handled in different ways - where the exhaust exits, where in the system a resonator is placed, diameter of pipes, frequency coming out of muffler size, & Helmholtz tube (side chamber that I think your performance muffler has). Our T24A is a handful for exhaust tone from being EFI/DI, turbocharged, & a 4cyl engine that’s rather hard to make sound good.
My current system is using the OE stock muffler & removing the resonator. Then placed a long Remark dual turn down outlet at the end of the tailpipe removed off of one of their GX550 tailpipes. I did it to deepen the tone & improve the look, without going wild. No drone, slightly louder & slightly deeper sound.
