Land Cruiser sound when running on electric only

We live way out in the country and can really notice the noise on back roads when you are going slow. Sort os a weird electric whirl noise. Drops off very abruptly at about 24-25 mph.

There are speakers front for sure and rear I believe. You could unplug but not sure if it would throw a code?

IIRC the volume can be changed in GTS+ but can’t remember for sure. They are for pedestrian safety.

The front is between the upper and lower bumper grills in the center.

Thanks - I just unplugged it to see what woudl happen and it threw a code. It is not big deal, just seems ratehr loud but that maybe because we dont have the city noise near us.

Thanks everyone!

You can modify it to selectively enable/disable it. The mod involves wiring a toggle switch to switch between the Toyota speaker and a dummy resistor load. The dummy resistor load prevents the code from being generated.

I believe that sound has been mandated on EVs and Hybrids (for while they are running on battery) for pedestrian safety.

As an example, earlier Teslas were not equipped, but current Teslas are. I drive a Ford Explorer Hybrid for work most of the time, and it makes a similar sound at about the same volume when on battery power.

FWIW, the EV mode sound on the Land Cruiser is nowhere near as loud inside as it was on my previous EV Venza (or for that matter our BMW i4). I got used to it pretty quickly.
