Is anyone using a Toyota credit card key, as seen in this video

Let me start off by saying that I enjoy tinkering/repairing cars as a hobby and I am willing to invest some money in it because it is enjoyable to me.

At a minimum you would need a subscription to TIS (Toyota Technical Information System) at the Professional Diagnostic level for either 2 days or a whole year. In my case I paid for a whole year which $1,360, but you can pay for two days which iirc costs $70.

You would also need a laptop and some sort of J5234 pass-through device, in my case I have a BMW ICOM Next, but any J5234 pass-through device would work, just a word of warning J5234 pass-through devices are expensive and the Chinese knockoff do not always work and can brick sensitive ECUs.

If you have a subscription to TIS and have installed GTS+, have a J5234 pass-through device, it is just a matter of going into the right menu and adding a new fob.

Appreciate the break down. I went down the rabbit hole last night and assumed the cost of it all would have ended up being the same as me going to the dealer. I only have a iPad and not allowed to download stuff on my work laptop.

Happy to report back that the fob works on 1958 models. The advisor mentioned it unlocked the digital key for me on my phone…but I would be way to paranoid to trust that.

I have not tried the Toyota Digital Key in large part because I do not like the Toyota app, but I do use the digital key for one of my BMWs with my Samsung S24 Ultra in the Samsung Wallet app and it works perfectly.

For whatever reason Toyota seems either to use a different standard or just does not want to work with Samsung and other phone makes, unlike Audi/BMW/RAM/Hyundai-Kia and others which seems to be more universal.

Good stuff. I have an old version of tech stream (10.x) and got in but could not do much other than basic ODB2 scanning. Goes to reason as it’s at lease 5 years old.

Was considering going down the path you outline but grabbed a carista for basic stuff.

Can you get into the ECU and adjust wheel circumference? Know the master techs won’t do this and wondering if it’s policy or locked out completely.

I honestly don't know as I have never tried.

IME, Toyota doesn't like anyone to mess around with certain things at least easily, unlike BMW which allows a lot more.

Toyota does not seem to release updated module calibration unless there is a specific reason. In contrast to BMW which is always releasing new calibrations to fix or improve things.

Is wheel circumference one of those things that Toyota doesn't want anyone to mess with, again I truly don't know.
