How to get better MPG

gas prices up significantly in the UK - diesel now at £1.83 per litre with £2.10 per litre in prospect before this CF recedes.

So in the Uk 4.54609 litres to a Uk gallon = £8.31 a gallon.

In the US this would equate to 3.78541 litres in a US gallon = $10.52 [at current £/$ exchange rate]

Usually cruise at 70mph to 85mph averaging 26.7mpg. So on my 107 mile trip to Bristol this week thought I’d explore how economically I could drive the LC250 [without roof bars but with KO3]

Outbound, keeping the speed below 71mph on motorways: 31.2 mpg [UK imperial]

Inbound following a big coach [with a tailwind] for 80 of those miles at 62-65mph = 38.3 mpg!!!

38.3mpg. I was stunned by the difference.

Conclusion, if you want to save on fuel slipstreaming is the way to go.

BTW average mileage previously 26.7 mpg.

I definitely recommend driving with your boost & EV meters on your dash to see how you are managing your charge. It also lets you stay more easily in the sweet spot for EV only driving as mentioned by the OP.

I also suggest seeing which mode works best for you. For me the only thing Eco does is dull the throttle, I don't actually get better MPG, if anything I get worst MPG in the city. I do use a mix of Eco & standard on long hauls. I can only assume its because I have to accelerate for longer limiting how much time I have available to LiCo? idk I also get far better mpg in the city than I do on the freeway/interstate.

Here is another thing I have noticed [for me] & is a bit contradicting to the ol' 'egg under your foot' saying.

If I accelerate softly like an egg is under my foot, I get maybe 11-14mpg. That is because my EV will either briefly pulse or doesn't activate at all, that puts all of my acceleration onto the 4 banger & turbo. If I accelerate more firmly and have more than 1/3 capacity in the battery (EV will not do much of anything at or below 1/3 capacity) then the EV activates and stays on until I start to LiCo.

Like I said above, I get the best MPG in the city, this is because the vehicle does not clip and only charges under braking and coasting—as far as I am aware.

The constant speeds with little to no coasting/braking on long drives simply depletes the battery too quickly leaving it all up to the 4banger. In the city though I have a ton of opportunities to charge the battery keeping the charge around 50%.

My interstate/freeway cruising MPG is only 12-14 giving me an impressively massive range of ~230 miles. In the city I usually average around 18-25mpg and am usually around ~240 miles per tank. My lifetime average is ~16mpg w/16k miles.

Big thing is to try a little bit of everything because the greatest thing I’ve realized [for me] is that none of it is consistent. Some times the ev works the whole time and I can accelerate lightly. Other times it just pulses and forcing me to totally lift off the accelerator and retry more aggressively to get the ev to work.

Someone said small tank? Yes, the NA market has one of the smallest tanks available with some regions having 110L OEM options available.

As for mods, the freeway or interstate is where this becomes most prevalent and why my range is only 230 miles per tank.

Initially people decided to get the “huge brick” off-road focused truck, MPG is their priority?
I know my thoughts/comments here can get rocks thrown, but just want to share with gang here
No need to argue and prove right or wrong. Be happy with whatever make your highest SPG

I commute 4 miles a day and don’t give a rats arse about MPG. My last vehicle was a 1997 Landcruiser that got 10.9 mpg, (always filled her 26 gallon tank with the best 91 octane money could buy)
However…as a community member I’m here on this topic contributing to the fine art of gas saving, I didn’t merely add a comment for self righteous fulfillment.

Nothing wrong with adding a little scientific method to the subject and geeking out on MPG#s

My Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon was hard on fuel. The Land Cruiser is slightly larger, likely heavier and for a boxy full time four wheel drive, the fact that it returns better mileage is a wonderous thing.

Much like the Jeep, I still average two weeks of driving on a full tank. The Land Cruiser can out sprint that Rubicon with 4:10s and has more acceleration ability on the highway. In spite of using 94 octane ethanol free fuel that costs more per unit, cost per tank is lower.

I use it for what it was built for but some of us are more "talented" than others at driving with efficiency...I suppose the master of efficiency, Scott Dixon, isn't on your radar.

BTW 20.6 coming down from Maine last night at 79 in 70 mph zones (gps #'s always) and 75 in 65mph zones.

So 20.3, 20.6 and 21.7 over 1119 miles = 20.86 mpg average.....ZERO sacrifices....and on regular to boot. Probably add 1 mpg if premium but tbd.

Ironically, no change in mileage with snows off and I swear the Michelin X Ice 3 tires are more quiet than the stock Yokos!

I MARVEL THAT A 5450LB BRICK CAN DO THIS! THESE USED TO BE 12-14 MPG VEHICLES. THIS AT THE SAME TIME THE COMFORT LEVELS EMBARRASS MY 2016 RANGE ROVER SPORT HSE!

Two recent trips this week. One short distance city driving and the other moderate distance mixed use city/highway. Both over 30+ MPG. (34.5 and 31.2 MPG respectively)

The hybrid system is capable of delivering outstanding gas mileage which is important for people who care about their gas bill or are in situations where they need to stretch out the small gas tank to reach the next refueling station.

In a strange sort of way, it is also fun and rewarding. You get to see your average MPG go from the low 20s to the low 30s just by using your driving skills. I am disappointed when it is below 25MPG and happy when I manage it above 30MPG. There is also immediate driving feedback with the experience of a smooth, quiet glide when the engine turns off and the artificial "Battlestar Galactica" sound is activated.

I am not stingy and I would still drive it even if it was 10MPG.

With that said… How the heck are you guys getting 30MPG?! Am I getting 14 - 16 because the car is so new or do my driving skills just suck?

Same feedback as others. Let it break in. I'm also in CA, frequently between 75-85 on the freeway. I'm averaging 19.3 mpg (fuelly; regular) at 53k miles. I don't think my LC in my usage will get better mpg than this, but I'm totally ok with it.

The mileage should improve after break-in, and winter blend fuel certainly doesn't help return good mileage. The average displayed on the dash will get more accurate after the sample size increases.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I did my first “long” drive with her yesterday. 100 miles. And got 20MPG average for the trip. So it’s definitely improving!
In love with how good it handles for its size and how comfortable it is for longer trips.

I’d have to say the Land Cruiser is a great driving vehicle regardless of MPG, and the numbers possible are just a bonus. I’d be disappointed if I was coming from a Prius, but for the size and weight of this thing Toyota did a great job.
