GX550 Overtrail Wheels/Tires on Meteor Shower Land Cruiser

New wheels looking sharp.

I picked up a set of 5 GX550 Overtrail wheels wrapped inToyo AT3 with no miles. A trip to the powder coat shop for Highland Bronze, and a set of center caps later.

Looks really nice! Maybe some black lug nuts would finish the look? Or bronze… hmm

So a side note on using the GX-550 Overtrail wheels. The lower offset does make a difference...in a less desirable way. Lots of rock rash on the lower door/rocker panels. I drive a lot of gravel and have had PPF put on the lower parts of the door after a paint repair. I didn't notice this at all with the stock +60mm offset wheels. Good news, Okotoks Tinting did a wicked job and you can barely notice it.

Someone at my office has a GX550 Overtrail, and I really liked the look of the wheels/tires. We had the Toyo AT3s on our previous 4runner and really liked them. I wanted to stick to stock size tires for weight, spare tire, and no worries about rubbing. The Land Cruiser will see difficult forest roads at worst, so they'll be great. I found a set of 4 on facebook and got them for 1100 without tire pressure sensors.

The stock 18" wheel/tire weighed 67lbs on my scale, and the Overtrail wheel/tire weighed 70.4, so that's pretty good. The thing that surprised me was the center caps actually fit. I'm really happy how it all came out.
Love this look. Powder coat Matte or Gloss black would probably look really good surprised no one tried that. How is the ride quality on the Toyos? Did you ever get a lift or modify suspension? I like the LC but the wheel/tire combos they ship with are awful. How is there no A/T tire option?? Even Honda Passport Trailsport has more aggressive wheels.

So these are the Toyo AT3s that came on the GX550, they are actually different than standard AT3. They are a little more street than offroad oriented. If you go to tirerack.com, and search for replacement tires for the GX550 overland, it will show you both the OEM AT3s, and the regular AT3s. It's an odd strategy by Toyo. They ride great, and I have no complaints. I had the regular AT3s on the previous 4runner, so I'm a fan.

I have no desire to change the suspension, the stock vehicle is plenty capable for the milder trails I want to do in it. The tires are almost 33" tall, which is a pretty big tire. It handled the mild trails in Moab (Gemini Bridges, Potash Road, Shafer Trail, Tower Arch, Eye of the Whale) and a couple of mountain passes in Colorado (Corkscrew Pass, Ophir Pass) with no issues.

Interesting will check that out. So the spec is 265/70/R18 with SL Load rating? I noticed from another members post there’s Open Country AT3 EV tires also and they’re available in SL 275/70/R18. So between standard AT3 and AT3 EV there’s 265/70/18 275/65/18 and 275/70/18 options. Slightly wider than stock may look good (but yours look great), so not sure how to decide between those three really.

I went with stock size tires, plenty big, and I know they won't rub. People often say "X size tire" won't rub, when they only drive on the street.

I have Open Country AT3 EV 275/70/R18 On GXOT wheels on my 26 LC and they do not rub on or off road.

Those are the exact tires and spec I’m leaning towards. But I drive almost exclusively city/highway. How do you like those so far for the street?

They are fine on the street but obviously louder than all season but I expected that. I’ve had trucks with AT tires before. If I was exclusively on road like you I probably would have chose differently.

Yeah A/S should always be quieter but we have ‘26 Honda Passport with A/T and ‘24 Land Rover Defender with A/S. Noise is close to the same. Maybe because Honda has acoustic glass but somehow Defender does not. Too bad LC doesn’t have acoustic, seems like on a top trim it should be there.

Hey everyone - first post on the forum after lurking for several months...

I love this look and made this change to my 2026 Premium. GX 550 OT wheels with 275/70/18 Toyo AT3's in E Load Rating. Prior to the Toyo's, I had actually tried the Falken AT4W's in the same size and same load rating. I ended up swapping to the Toyo's as I thought the reduced weight would improve handling.

I've had the car aligned, tires balanced, re-balanced, road-force balanced, and match mounted and the handling is garbage and it's driving me nuts! I've also experimented with both 36 PSI and 42 Psi cold pressure. Despite all of this, I'm seeing:
  • Constant drift requiring persistent counter-steer correction (both directions, not consistently one-sided)
  • Tramlining and left-right hunting on grooved pavement
  • A generally unsettled, exhausting highway feel — not harsh, just never planted
  • Crown sensitivity and an "ice skating"-type sensation at highway speed
  • With Lane Keep Assist engaged on a straight road, the vehicle makes constant, dizzying left-right microcorrections
I'm wondering if anyone else is having a similar issue? Aside from wheels, tires, Slee Skids, and Slee sliders, the vehicle is bone stock. I'm wondering if they maybe missed something during PDI? It almost feels like some sort of calibration (EPS, traction control, etc.) is off...

Any ideas from this brilliant group? Photo & alignment report attached,.

Point of curiosity- do you have cruise control on when experiencing the worst of your symptoms?

I have the same wheels and tires and played A LOT with tire pressure to get ride the way I like. I run 32 PSI cold. To me 36+ and the ride is noticeably harsher.

Did it handle the same before and after the alignment?
Was the alignment done at the same time as the tires, or later to try to fix the problem?
It looks like maybe they tried to get more caster to help it track better.

Yes - cruise control is on when these symptoms are the most noticeable. However, there is definitely still an unplanted / unsettled feeling even when cruise control is turned off.

Very interesting. Aside from harshness, did you experience anything like I've have (handling, tracking, wandering, etc?). I'm okay with the harshness (compromise from the E-rated tire), but the unsettling feeling of the vehicle is getting old..

I never complained about this before the alignment, although I got the alignment the same day as the new GX OT wheels and the original Falken tires.... so many confounding variables. However, in stock form, I recall telling my wife that the car was "so much less exhausting drive thanmy previously lifted GX 460"... Now, after the GX wheels, tires, and the alignment, I'm feeling the same - exhausted - lots of work to keep this thing pointed straight down the highway, with constant micro adjustments. For what it's worth,. ,I have like 5k on the Toyo's...

So the obvious common factor is GX wheels making both your previous rig and new rig drive like this. ;) (I realize you probably didn't have stock GX wheels on the 460)

Like mentioned above, lower tire pressure is easy enough to be worth a try, but I know E-load tires want higher pressures usually.

From the alignment, the only other idea I have is the caster. More caster usually tracks better with the tradeoff being heavier steering feel, so more should be better in your case. Something to try though would be to see if they can get caster closer to nominal of 4.2 or whatever the spec is.

I have not had any handling or tracking issues at any of the pressures I’ve tested so you likely have something else going on. I’m far from a mechanic but doesn’t proper positive Toe angle help tracking? Maybe try alignment at another shop.

Alright thanks guys for the info. Here's my plan:
  • I'm headed to the dealer tomorrow to confirm that they hit everything on the PDI
  • I'll do a chalk test at some point in the next few days
  • Revisit the alignment (perhaps different shop)
  • Swap Toyo's back to the factory wheels (thankfully I still kept them)
Will report back in the event that someone else in the future has a similar issue!
