In Toyota vehicles with JBL systems (e.g., 2023 Tacoma, 4Runner), front door speakers are commonly 2 ohms. This is because JBL designs these speakers to draw more power from the factory amplifier, maximizing output without requiring a high-wattage amp.
It’s true that lower impedance results in higher power current delivered from the amp. Electricity behaves like water - envision the amp as a lake and the speakers as rivers that drain the lake. Lower impedance (resistance) equates to a wider river allowing more water to drain from the lake at once.
But past a certain point it becomes dangerous to run amps hot like that. That certain point is generally 2 ohms total load for almost all normal amplifiers.
If the door speakers are 2 ohms, which I now understand they are, and they are running in parallel with any other speaker of any impedance, the resulting total load is under 2 ohms and therefore not suitable to use with any commonly available amp design. There must be a resistor in line somewhere.
