Best Jump Box?


been using LokiThor brand. its chinese, but seem to work great. form factor is much nicer than Noco. I have a couple of Noco Jumpstarter and compressor.

the LokiThor has a built in voltmeter, which is nice to have. the carry handle and longer cables for alligator clips.

form factor is great, but i think Noco still has better components
 
I carry a NOCO GB70 in all my vehicles. This size is probably overkill for a LC, but if you live in a cold climate you'll want to upsize. To my surprise, the GB70 was able to start a V8 engine at -25F on a car that had the lights left on overnight. The starter wouldn't even click before hooking up the jump box, but 30 seconds with the GB70 and it started. My only complaint is that it uses a micro-USB cord for charging, which is annoying in 2025, but not a deal breaker.
I have 1 in each vehicle too, they're also great to charge usb powered devices in a jam. I also have the noco battery charger and i love it. Noco's use of the micro connector is maddening though. Only con of the device.

I have two Nocos- the wife commandeered the first one for powering her devices and our USB powered cat fountain during power outages, so I took that as a sign I should buy a second larger capacity Noco to keep in my previous vehicle. Both are multiple years old, seem to hold their charge for a good amount of time for when needed, and the larger unit stashes nicely in the Land Cruiser.

When in the research phase before buying the Land Cruiser, it seemed like a no brainer to keep one in the vehicle based on its easily discharged OEM 12V battery. When the time comes, I will upgrade that battery and just keep an eye on it for now knowing the Noco is standing at the ready. As for their connector, I have a few of those kicking around and they seem to fully charge in a reasonable amount of time.
 
What size Noco jump boxes are you folks running? I'm on the fence between the GBX55 and GBX75.

GB70 is a bit more expensive. Is it overkill? What is the GBX series all about? What is different from the GB series? I just want a reliable jump starter but not over the top.
I have looked at website but do not understand the differences when it comes to starting our vehicles.
 
Overkill? For a single use yes, but for insurance longer term I'd say no.

The last time I used it, it wasn't on my vehicle. It had been charged and stored for months. I came across a motorist with a failed battery blocking a busy roadway and driveway while I was driving my work vehicle. They didn't have enough juice to power their 4 way flashers and it was dark, so they were sitting ducks. I ran back to my personal vehicle (about five minutes away), grabbed the GB70 and got them going again. After starting their vehicle it showed no drop in stored capacity, even considering I used the built in flashlight to make connections.

The GBX series appears to be an improvement over the GB series (GBX didn't exist when I bought my newest one). Faster charging and larger capacity, $50 more. I'd be down for trying one if I needed to purchase a new jump starter.

I used to carry jumper cables around in my personal vehicle, but having been a victim of someone's stupidity while being a good Samaritan and having to replace an alternator after they removed cables on their end and shorted them together, I prefer to pack a jump box now as it is more idiot proof, doesn't put my vehicle at risk.

All you are doing is providing enough charge to bring the computer to life and allowing the traction battery to allow the Land Cruiser to start.

That is true for a number of modern vehicles. I can name three I have owned in the last fifteen years where the OEM battery pooped the bed and wouldn't even allow the starter to do more than click. Most computerized vehicles made today need more voltage to complete a start cycle than old school vehicles that would warn you your battery was on its way out with slow cranking, giving you some time to charge it or replace it if necessary when more convenient. To compound this, most modern OEM batteries today are not built to last, and when their voltage drops to levels that would still give you a slow crank on an older vehicle, it is barely enough to tickle the ECU on newer vehicles- very little warning.

Could you get away with keeping a low capacity jump starter for such a time in the Land Cruiser? Sure. It may allow you to do so a few times before needing to recharge the jump starter. It really depends on how much redundancy you want to pay for.

As with many things on Amazon, I question the numbers claimed by the OEMs. Here's what I can't figure out about the unit...if you connect a capacitor directly to a battery, it will charge up to the voltage of the battery, but never any higher. Someone smarter than me (an electrical engineer?) will have to explain the black magic involved in getting the capacitor jump box to charge up to a higher potential difference than the source battery. Things that make me go hmmm... Having said that, it obviously works as advertised - I saw videos of people connecting the box to dead batteries, charging the box, then using the box to start the vehicle.

It will now have enough current and voltage for only a short period of time which is long enough to turn over a starter and start an engine, or in the Land Cruisers case to turn on the computer and once the computer checks the high voltage DC circuit for any shorts the jumper will also power 2 relays in the traction battery connecting the traction battery to power the vehicle and start the engine.

Correct and another benefit, at least with my C-Jumper, is it holds a charge in the capacitors for a very long time and when connected to a drained 12v battery, it takes seconds to fully charge the capacitors and allow the LC to fire up the computers and normal 12v vehicles to fire up the starter.

I'll add to that by saying that a supercapacitor does not need to be cycled (charged - discharged) regularly like a lithium ion batter does in order to maintain its usable life span. As you mentioned, it will hold some charge and likely a lot longer than a lithium ion battery.
A supercapacitor jumper would be my choice since you can just leave it in your vehicle and not ever have to check or maintain it. Plus it will have a much longer useable life span than rechargeable battery jumpers, likely decades.
 
I'm planning to get a jump box to carry with me when I'm off-road. I'm thinking about getting a Weego 44s, a small lithium ion battery pack that would bring the computers online and help get the LC started. Does anyone have any experience with Weego or a similar product?

Have you thought about a dual battery system. We have them here that fit under that large box in the rear you don’t like or under the hood, both have jump facility?

I'm not sure what you mean by "large box in the rear". I ended up getting a NOCO GBX 45. It's small enough to fit in the space behind my hybrid battery and is cost efficient (about $100 USD). For me, that was a great solution.
 
This may be a stupid question but are you connecting the jump box directly to the battery or to the terminals under the hood used for jump starting? I've not read the manual on this yet. I'm leaning heavily to the Noco GBX55 if only to have a little more juice than the 45. If anyone has the 55 with the case, does it fit in any of the cubbies in the back?

on p. 623 of the LC Owners Manual, the terminals under the hood are specifically called "jump start terminals". I've also used the terminals to power my air compressor when airing up the tires after off roading.

I have the GBX 45 (3.28" x 6.83" x 2.05") and it fits inside the narrow cubbie under the floor at the rear of the LC. The GBX 55 is slightly larger (4.9" x 7.66" x 2.5"). The larger width of the 55 (4.9" vs. 3.28") would make it tougher to fit into the same space.
 
The two times my 12v battery has died (both times while camping), I swear two 9-volt batteries wired in series connected by paper clips would have brought it back to life.

Toyota needs to figure this out, as both times it happened to me there was no reason for it, other than the car not being driven for 2 and 3 days. It's inane that the hybrid battery cannot be used to keep the 12v topped off, as required.
 
I went by the video from post #27 in this thread. I think that guy is fairly objective in his reviews. Bought the Gooloo GP4000 for under $80 from amazon after looking at all the details in his chart. I think bang for the buck, this works for me. I can say it's small. It should fit in one of the cubbies under the mat in rear.

I do have one comment regarding these devices which I don't understand. Many of the units tested did not jump a completely dead battery. Isn't that the point of this thing?😂. I mean I bought to jump my battery if it dies. I am clueless and admit to buying another contraption I have seen on the forums which I would otherwise have never purchased🤣🤕
 
I've settled on picking up a NOCO, just waiting around for the possibility they will do some kind of black friday deal.

The GBX55 seems perfect but if the GBX45 can fit in one of the storage cubbies, I may just go with that. My thought is that if I need a jump, I can just top the jumper box off with either the 120V outlet or one of the USB-C ports after I get the LC running.

Considering our vehicles do not have an alternator, I'm not sure about recharging the 12V after a jump. I used to just leave the car running for an hour or take it for a drive.

I thought I read somewhere that the hybrid battery charges the 12V differently and may require a more specific procedure? Couldn't find anything in the manual about it.
