2025 1958
I have not taken apart the dash or tail gate to find out myself. But, is there a center dash speaker and sub in the base 1958? My internet research says no.

Is there an amp hiding somewhere in the car or is the head unit powering everything?

The answer is there is no center speaker and the stereo head unit powers all of the speakers. It’s an okay sound system, but it’s somewhat on the low end. It uses paper cones like speakers from the 1990’s and the stereo really needs to be turned up to get any sort of bass or clarity out of them.

Watch this video if you want to learn a little more about the Audio system and get the bonus topic of how to install a supplemental amplifier for the stereo.

I watched the video. Assuming I did a JL sound processing unit in the dash and not beatsonic, where would I mount an amp to power the front door speakers. Under the drivers seat? Or behind the second row in the storage cubby? Is there space opposite the 12V battery—like on the opposite side of the car?

Crutchfield walk you through how to check which system you have and then suggest suitable upgrades for each pair of speakers.

I took my 1958 to a local high-end stereo shop. Planned on JL Audio throughout and a smaller 8-inch sub box in the back. They were thinking of mounting the processor under one seat and the amp under another.

I still plan to have them do the work, but I put it on the back burner because I had yet to figure out my rear storage situation and then got bogged down with a few trials at work. Now that those are over, I've ordered the Trekboxx platform for the rear, will put some drawers over that, and I believe that will open up some more mounting area for an amp and a sub somewhere in the back. Something like where the ARB compressor and fuse boxes are in this video:

Edit to add: when I took my Cruiser to the audio shop, it was certainly the first one they had seen. This was sometime in July or August. I believe I was one of the first people in my metro with the new Land Cruiser. So they may have better ideas now about where to install things --either through their own experience or through some high-end audio installer network--than they did then.
