Rear Dash Cam Mounting Ideas

Just joined the forum today, when I see this post I thought I should share where I mount my FITCAMX Rear Camera.
Which I mounted right under factory rear camera, hope this helps.

That is a nice idea.

I didn’t have any problems mounting mine to the rear glass though; just left a little slack in the cable.

One thing though - in the wintertime rear glass gets super dirty around my area. There is some utility to mounting the camera in a location that the wiper reaches. Otherwise past a certain point the video is unusable.

Hi was looking to finally getting around to installing the rear camera for my Fitcamx and I was curious how did you all mount your rear facing dash cams.

I’m certain I don’t want to mount it on the rear glass.

Did you purchase a bracket or just drill into the plastic by the rear upper camera?

I bought this little plastic clip from Etsy and it clips onto the headliner. So that way, the dashcam is not mounted to the hatch so it can stay stationary

I did a similar installation to this, though my cable is routed on the other side.

The only difference is that I ran the power cable up through the lift gate wiring harness, so when the hatch is open, you cannot see any cables.

Did you stick that camera on with 3M VHB? If so, how is it holding up?

Pretty shit. It was fine for a few months but I think once the weather started warming up it started losing its adhesive stickiness.

Going to look into square magnets or some other solution that holds up a bit more longterm.

Dang! I hate to hear that. Did you use 3M VHB? Or was it what was on the camera?

The camera had its own adhesive material on it out of the box but it did not work very well. I got much stronger stuff at Home Depot and swapped it.

Going to try cleaning the area and reapplying new tape before getting some magnets, but most likely that’s what will work out the best long term. For what it’s worth, the tape on the camera itself is still attached just fine. I think the issue is that the texture of the trim piece doesn’t allow it to form the best bond.

I bought one of those metal discs from the Dashcam store. I slipped it on the housing of the Toyota rear facing camera and it seems to have locked into place. Maybe I will use it. But I’d rather mount it on the plastic, slightly to the drivers side of the Toyota camera, just so that the Garmin mini dash cam will be up and more out-of-the-way. Maybe I will do the latter first, and if the 3M VHB doesn’t stick to the Toyota plastic, I will move it down to the position below the Toyota camera.
