Question about rear hatch close and lock button.

I had this same problem with the auto lock intermittently working. I am tall guy so when I stand too far away from hatch and hit the auto lock button, it wouldn’t work (with the key fob in my pocket). But when I stand under the hatch or directly beside it, it works every time! It is just very sensitive to the proximity of the key fob

New information (to me anyway).

I took my LC in for the 10,000 mile service. Although I thought I had succeeded in programing this button myself I had still ben experiencing sporadic results with no pattern. So I told them to program it at the dealer.

They told me you have to hold the fob in your hand when you press the button. I told them that was BS and it's called keyless entry for a reason and the manual says nothing about this. But what it did confirm is that the vehicle is very sensitive to the location of the fob to ensure you do not lock it in the vehicle. I tried it with the fob in my hand and it works flawlessly, of course. But I think it can work with the fob in your pocket if you're standing in the right place and maybe not wearing multiple layers of clothing like many of us are now.

In short, it's "working as designed" but Toyota could have done a better job.

With a short transmission range of the fob it's harder for thieves to clone your signal.

I only use a credit card key, which has an even shorter range and have no issue holding the CC key in my hand when I want to use the "lock and Walk" feature. (most times it works being in my pocket but not every time)

I keep the key fob in my pocket and I’ve never had a problem with the closing lock.

The back hatch has been an intermittent mystery for us since purchasing. Today I decided to search the forum for advice. Someone mentioned standing underneath the door and push the button. I’m tall. That seemed like a really bad idea. But that’s how it works. It’s fine for the wife and she uses that feature more than I do. So thank you forum.
