Excuse the probably obvious newbie question. I haven’t even taken delivery yet (Monday!) but I’ve been spending way too much time reading here and I haven’t seen an outright answer yet. When going with wheels with less than the stock offset which then have poke compared to the 60 offset std wheels, how much spray and extra washing/stone chips do you actually get. Obviously the more poke the more the spray up on the side of the body, but I’m specifically asking about a small change as you would get going from the stock 60 offset wheels to 45 or 50 offset wheels like the 18” Tacoma TRD wheels or the GX wheels. Looking for real world experience.

Lots, if you actually have poke.

I have the +47.5mm offset TRD Pro wheels with 285s. They poke a little on my flat 1958 fenders. They wouldn’t poke with LC trim fenders, especially if running a 265 or 275 width.

IRT spray, I definitely get more splash up from anything wet I hit (water, mud, beach sand). I also see more dust dirt wash up. I am also running the flat boards and do hear rocks and stuff hitting under those, but I’m not sure how much of that can be attributed to the poking section.

Here’s the thing about poke… when looking at +40-50mm, the tires makes a bigger difference. An AT is naturally going to throw more. A 285 is going to poke 10mm more than your 265s. Also, the fenders of the LC get closer to the vehicle at the low points (below the arch). No poke will still poke down low, even if fully tucked up top.

IMO, anything in the offset range you’ve provided will be safe with your LC trim fenders. If you stick with 265/275 widths you will have near zero issue.

EDIT: added photos of my setup for reference:

As hinted at, which model are you taking delivery of? Wheel flares are different widths between 1958 and LC/LC, Premium and FE models.

I have the Tacoma TRD 45 offset wheels, and think they are about perfect on the Premium. With slightly wider tires than OEM it brings them right to the edge of the wheel wells. No flinging crap up the sides and no chips. These would "poke" on the 1958 trim.

Like Dub said - the tires are going to effect the body spray as much as the poke. Road tire vs AT is huge on what they pick up & put out. Same with tire size. Going from stock 9-9.5” wide tire to 10.5” in tire width adds even more offset. Then there is the AT shoulder/sidewall design between different manufacturers.
It adds up on what is hanging out.

  • Changed OE style rim, but both were 60mm offset
  • Added 1” SpiderTrax spacers & now rim is 35.5mm offset.
  • Went from 265 @ 9.5” wide stock tire to 275 @ 10.1” wide.
  • Adding to AT width change, the tire design from Nitto R/Grappler to Falken A/T4W Wildpeak the sidewall’s mud feature make the tire tread wider overall.
