Need info on Ca rules for traveling with pistol

Channeling Marianna, you should leave your spare tire at home. You likely won't need it and it is a hassle to access and use. Some kind person will come to your aid or AAA will show up in an hour or so. It's your right.

Most new cars don’t even come with spare tires anymore. Yet our 250’s come with a full size one!

Not sure what all the debate is about. The OP makes it clear HE WILL be carrying his firearm with him on his trip. He’s only asking for advise on how to carry it legally through CA. I don’t have the answer but I believe there are many good legal resources online to help guide you. This probably isn’t the best place for that.

I hope you've learned that you won't get the 2A support you thought you'd find here. I plan our trips carefully and if I have any carry and/or transport questions whatsoever, I call that specific law enforcement jurisdiction. Assuming you possess a legal concealed carry permit you might find it is reciprocal with many other states (unfortunately not CA). Some are not, but visitors can still open carry legally. Do your research. I have a Washington and Oregon concealed carry license, and I can carry in about 47 states. Here's a helpful hint. Get a couple of 10rd mags, load them and keep them within reach. Mount a biometric safe like the VEVOR in your vehicle. Viola, problem solved...mostly. My safety and my family's safety is paramount, and if push comes to shove, I simply won't visit that state. I grew up in the Bay Area of CA and I will never go back there without a weapon and I'm not about to go through hell to obtain an out of state concealed carry license (which is possible now). Happy trails.

That wasn't my takeaway, many of us posted advice about California, I asked my Brother who has firearms and lives in California.

Yes, there are some folks advocating leaving the firearm at home, but the majority provided info to the OP's question.

Maybe I am judging, but this is spoken like a true Californian...

No it’s not…CA transplant maybe, but not all Californians. We have plenty of 2A card carrying CCWs and hunters in this state. Locked in an approved safe/case (think TSA) and separated from ammo. Probably leave the >10 rnd mags…but even that can be disputed in this state after “freedom week.”

Believe me, I know. California is one of my favorite states to hunt in and visit, and I have family who live in CA that carry CCW's as well.

California is awesome in so many ways. From a gun rights perspective, not so much - which is why the OP started this thread in the first place.

I'm driving from Austin to Whittier this weekend and decided to take my revolver because I will be stopping outside of Phoenix to sleep off the side of the road (Mescal - dispersed camp). I know when i get to California i have to put my revolver in a locked box but i don't know where to put the bullets, is the glove box ok? Also, will a BIO-lockbox be ok (thumbprint)?

BTW - I have Glocks but no 10-round mags.

Thanks for all the advice, I did transfer my weapon to a locked box and put it in the back of the LC before i crossed into SoCAL (ammo stayed in the glovebox). Luckily, i had no interactions with good or bad guys during my trip so all went well.

I traveled around 2600 miles round trip and i saw many beautiful landscapes along the way. The LC was awesome on the road, it was comfortable and capable the entire way. I got 14 mpg on my way west due to headwinds and about 20 mpg on the way back ( Avg 80 mph in sport mode).
