Maps from dashboard cluster disappears after drive connect expires

Gaia GPS on CarPlay is my primary navigation, but folks if you’re going somewhere without cell connection that you’re not familiar with, bring a paper map.
OsmAnd maps are great for no cell service areas. Uses the gps in your phone and the extremely detailed area maps are downloaded to your phone too. Has hiking trails and fire roads and you can drop breadcrumbs.
It's not onxoffroad, but is free for basic use and cheap for full use. Guzzles phone battery btw.

So back to the past with maps...

Damn these capitalistic subscription fees....

OnX has downloadable maps for your cell and when combined with car play....... works. Not as straight forward as apple maps but to be honest, I've never been anywhere with paved roads that apple maps didn't work and when traveling in sketchy cell coverage I switch to OnX. I have most of the East coast dwld'd in OnX not so much for traveling but for property lines and ownership........ which I find useful.

Google Maps, Apple Maps, most third party map apps, even my Garmin watch would let you to download & use offline maps.
Toyota built in navigation will not let you do that & will not work in the areas without AT&T mobile service, it's also inferior to other apps in terms of navigation and UI.
I am less than impressed with Toyota software & entertainment system, but their nav system is probably the worst of it.
I just wish, there was a way to remove all references/signs of this POS nav from my screen completely...

I was driving my buddy's GX today and his map cluster on the dash is way better than what we get. I would not worry about it disappearing off the cluster if you can still use the maps on the main screen.

Yes, the reason for the $15. monthly charge for the continued screen support goes to ATT or carrier Toyota pays to implement the cell service. So toyota drop the line subscription after 1 year. If you opt out the service goes dark. There goes your link to Toyota with the line drop.
Whether or not its worth it to pay $ monthly fees may vary....

Here WeGO is another phone navigation app for your phone. The benefit of this app is that you can easily use it in offline mode by downloading maps at the continenent/country/state-province level. It works great in areas with no cell service.

It used to be Nokia's mapping app but a consortium of German car manufacturers bought it when Nokia went tits up and I believe use the map data for their navigation systems.
