Hino Motors ownership change

A bulk of our Land Cruiser 250s are assembled by Hino Motors at their Hamura plant in Tokyo. Hino used to be a subsidiary of Toyota who owned 50.1%. As of this year, Hino has been moved to a holding company called Archion, with equal ownership by Toyota and Daimler Truck. It is somewhat disappointing that Toyota is no longer a majority owner. Interestingly, the Hamura plant will now be owned and operated by Toyota, with Hino truck assembly moving elsewhere.

Kind of buries the lead though, no? Whether or not Toyota retains majority ownership of a distinctly separate brand (Hino) is of little consequence to the consumer. The fact that the Hamura plant is now exclusively one of Toyota’s should be a sort of reassurance, especially considering the speculative claims of Tahara built trucks being, at least anecdotally, more reliable. If I haven’t misspoke, I’d call this a win for anyone interested in future LC purchases. So why disappointment?

I assure you my intent is not an argument. I’d like to understand is all, and maybe learn something I don’t know.

Disappointed that Toyota is relinquishing full control of a good truck company. As for the Hamura plant, Toyota taking over can only be good, but most likely inconsequential. I bet all the workers on the Toyota assembly lines will be retained, the only change being the patch on their uniform.
