I believe the smaller wire set is for turn signal and emergency lights.
Some stores sell the lights with “brake light function” ONLY, they will not include that set.
The one we had is the combo of brake light+turn signal light+emergency light
Yeah. I love these additional lights for safety on roads at night and on dusty trails.

Getting the struts off is pretty straight forward. Running the wiring is harder but very doable! I assume the kit would come with directions and IMO the most time consuming part would be running the switch wires from the "D" pillar area, across the top of the rear hatch headliner and through the rubber accordion boot, into the actual hatch. Not hard at all but time consuming. If you decide to try it, hit me up for some pointers. I've removed, several times, all the trim panels and run many wires and cables along the same routes. That rubber boot comes out pretty easy, if you've done it before" but the boot white plastic keeper is broken fairly easy.

Pro tip: make yourself a "deadman" support for holing up the rear hatch when you disconnect the gas struts. Basically a "T" made from 2X4s (T part on the hatch and the other end on the ground) I've tried using a ladder and blocks and a jack, but the "deadman" worked the best.
My thought process hasn't changed...... Don't be afraid to try, the worst that can happen is you put it back the way it was and pay someone else to do it. That being said be smart enough to stop before you do something that can't be undone......... useless you are absolutely sure it's correct....... like cutting something off, drilling a hole where it will be visible (and making sure what's on the other side).
There are 2 versions (brake light: red or amber/yellow). I guess that you ordered the amber version without intention….
I ordered the red, guess they sent the wrong one, double checked before ordering, and just looked at the one posted and my order, both say red. Guess I’ll return it
