Dead Battery again!

Has anyone charged the 12v battery with a trickle charger, I am trying to do it directly to the battery terminals, my car has the battery in the engine compartment, but a few minutes after putting it to charge it disconnects and does not continue charging, and for a good while it does not let me try again, and when I try the same thing happens again. Has this happened to anyone else?

This may be a non-issue.......... trickle chargers are designed to shut off/go in to sleep mode when the battery's charge reaches a certain threshold and start back up when the charge drops below a certain threshold.

Thanks EOD Guy for replying, but the charger in any of the other cars I have when it reaches full charge as you mention goes into Standby but stays on, in the Land Cruiser a few minutes after putting it to charge it overheats and turns off completely, I think there may be some incompatibility problem. Regards Paco

I have a Battery Tender hooked up under the hood to the jumper terminal. It charges fine and goes to float mode when charged. Never had a problem. Is the charger you are using in good order?

Can you show us (me) where you have it hooked up to? I have a dongle that I want to hook up, under the hood, so that I can just plug my charger into the dongle to charge Miss Daisy.

Red wire to the POS stud and the Black wire to any body/fender bolt.

I have tried it in my wife's car and it works well, however tomorrow I will try to charge it with another charger, I will let you know, thanks for your interest. Regards Paco

Optima’s are awesome batteries! I’ve considered putting one in Miss Daisy in the near future, even though I have not had the same problem as you.
I will disagree. Not trying to be a dick but ever since Optima outsourced to Mexico the quality has gone into the toilet. I have had several fail on me. I just wanted to share my experience. I would do some research. They may have fixed their issues but I was in the stereo business where this battery was a staple and it went down hill quickly!

I had no idea. Thanks.

Is your charger lead acid battery compatible? There are different charge methods for Lead Acid, Li-Ion, Gel and AGM. Using the wrong charger or charge mode can be dangerous and ruin the battery if nothing else.

Of course, the charger is for lead/acid batteries, and it works correctly in any of my other cars, but not in the Land Cruiser, after 15 minutes it locks/turns off and does not turn on when connecting it again, it needs several hours of rest to be able to turn it on 🤷‍♂️, greetings Paco

My Noco Genius 2 charger (2 amp) recharged my (US spec) Land Cruiser battery last night, and everything worked normally (i.e. the normal sequence of charging lights indicating progress, and once the battery was full, the charger went into standby/monitor mode). This took several hours. But everything worked normally (just like on my other non-hybrid cars). I was using the specified jumper points in the engine bay to hook up my charger, and I was charging a new Optima Yellowtop DH6 battery.

Note that Toyota clearly states that you should not use a charger with more than 5 amps (not sure how big yours is). The manual also states that you should hook the charger directly to the battery, and be sure to disconnect the battery ground before charging -- I didn't do either of those...

Thanks Mikie, I've been trying to find in the manual what you say about the charger not being higher than 5 amps and I haven't been able to find anything about it, keep in mind that my car is not a hybrid, it has a Diesel engine without hybridization, I have checked and my battery charger has a 12V output of 7 amps, if you are right perhaps that is the problem, but as I mentioned in my user manual there is no reference to the 5 amp maximum that you mention, if it refers to charging the battery outside the vehicle or failing that if it is done in the car, disconnecting the ground connection. Regards Paco

Paco -- here you go (attached). Not sure of the relevance given you have a diesel and no hybrid...

I have always liked to close threads so that the information is useful, so regarding the issue raised by me, after doing several tests and checks and not finding a cause that justified why the charger turned off in the Land Cruiser and worked well in other cars with smaller batteries, I decided to open the charger, and the problem is a fairly deteriorated capacitor, so as the Land Cruiser battery is more demanding, the charger stopped working. Thank you friends for your help and interest. Greetings Paco
