Dakar 2026 - 300 v Octa

For those running on Method rims, this is what it looks like in the sand. Granted it's a dakar raptor.

Super cool shots, thanks for sharing! It looks to be the same wheel many here are using.

Rest day in Riyadh

It was looking like the Defenders would be 1, 2 and 3 in the overall after today, but the #500 Defender has yet to finish today's stage and has likely encountered trouble. They'll fall to 4th overall.

I hope this is a sign of the Defenders finally giving in, half way through the competition. Maybe wishful thinking...

Wouldn’t bet against Defender, JLR has committed Β£50M over the next three years to their RallyRaid project and they have Dakar50 [2027] in their sights.

It’s the Toyota response which intrigues me. The T1+Prototype category appears to be their primary focus…

Agreed. Short of the unibody snapping in half, there isn't much they can't fix.

I would like to see GR Gazoo Racing take over, inject some more money into the team, and field a third car. I just don't know how they can make them run significantly faster if they're limited by the V35A power output.

Looks like their alternator belt broke. I wonder what the process is for changing that.

They received a 24H penalty. I'm surprised an alternator belt wasn't an easy repair. Makes me wonder how the penalty system works.

Thanks for clarifying how they ended up over a day behind, I had no idea the penalties could reach that high (seems extreme for a belt). I think this penalty effectively ruins their chance of winning the Class.

Seems like it was more than the belt. Like If they had to change the entire engine, that would give them the 24h penalty.

Finally found some details. They had to be towed, they didn't fix it.
"Then Peterhansel and his navigator MichaΓ«l Metge hit trouble. With 200 kilometres to run, a snapped alternator belt forced them to pullover. That’s not the sort of repair that can be carried out quickly, so a lengthy delay ensued until one of the support trucks arrived before towing them back to camp".

All over bar-the-shouting with the last stage tomorrow - Saturday 17th.

Looks like a convincing victory for Defender in the stock class.

Toyota should make 3rd in stock and the T1+ class while tight looks to be Dacia’s to lose.

How will Toyota respond in 2027?

Final results are in. Easy win for Defender, taking 1st and 2nd place.

Toyota has top options. Either pass and avoid another humiliation, or participate and get humiliated again. Land Rover is King and there is no question about it.

Without something drastic to increase their pace, it might be futile. I’d have to read the rule book in detail to understand what’s holding them back, but I think it’s just horsepower. Unfortunately, I don’t see Toyota dropping the GR GT’s turbo V8 into a production 300, lol.

Would that engine fit in a 250?? πŸ˜ƒ

Defender OCTA dominate DAKAR Rally 1/2/3.
( Winner - Stock Category )
