Car Camping Solution

Because I spent all of my pennies purchasing my new 2025 LC, I had to go with a cheap option from Amazon for camping in my suv. These are plastic pallet pieces that snap together and stack for storage. $69 for (4) 19.7x11.8x3.9in. I have a piece of memory foam that goes on top to fill in any gaps. It also helps with loading to have a somewhat flat surface. Bambed makes a leveler that I will buy some day but for now, this works.

I originally posted this in the wrong thread so I deleted it….
I made my own “Bam-Beds” style platform. Pretty happy with how it turned out especially since I used scrapped plywood flooring and have almost no carpentry skills.

Now I just leave the lids off the 3 storage bins and have enough room under the platform to store the air mattress under for “hidden” storage

Yours is too hardcore for me ;-)

$26 and 1 hour later from Home Depot...insulated foam. I have a Thule tub so I don't need drawers.

I just used this folding gymnastics mat. I cut off one third of it, so it's only two panels. I thought I would need two of these stacked to make 4" platform but it turns out that one 2" is perfectly comfortable. Folds up in half when I'm not using it.

I did shorten one of the panels by a few inches (cut it open, cut the foam, the re-sewed it...no I don't know how to sew, but it was easy) so that it fits perfectly when folded open.

I've got a nice, high R value, Exped megamat that I unroll on top of it.

I use the leveling pads from Deep Sleep Overland. I got 2 of the rav4 mat, they told me thats the biggest but I think they are all the same even the 4runner one. its about 10 inches short if I lay one as intended but I got 2 and lay them wide and its a perfect length of the trunk. they pack up really small too which was a big reason why i didnt go for some sort of folding gym mat solution. I gave them feedback on the mat being short for the LC and it sounded like they would make one specifically for the new LC at some point.

I tried the REI double platform bed and it was just too unsteady, took up so much space and my head was too close to the roof, made it hard to get up/in/out. I used the mat it came with as a leveling platform instead which was a perfect fit but decided to return it because the mat alone isnt worth $500 and it still took up a ton of space.

Nice option, too! I think you would need to stack them as they re 2" each and we need at least 4" height?

No i think they are 4 inches but I could be wrong. sits pretty even with the 2nd row when folded, ill try to get a pic of that soon. This photo was just a test so i hadnt pumped them up that much. and the mattress looks a bit more slanted only because I also had this headrest on I was testing from AMZN. I just hadnt adjusted it to the right length.

I bought the same pad, very comfortable. As someone else already pointed out, I put a small blanket in between to fill the gap between the back seats and the floor. My wife doesn't need one as she's shorter. We enjoy the experience.

I also have a Thule tub which stores the sleeping pad, 2 camping chairs, and all my camping accessories. For pan and pots, cooking ingredients I store them in 2 plastic containers and put them in the back area together with 2 paddle boards. It works for me.

Hey do you mind sharing what brand mattress that is? Or is that a cover on a Hest long dually? Thanks!

It's out of stock on WM site now. I'm sure you could find similar on Amazon.

Played around and found this to be the best option for me. I only spent $33 on this. Board is from ikea for $20 , which is the perfect size/cut. Then got 2x4x4 plank, with 8 L brackets for $13 from Home Depot. Cut the plank and mounted it. Pretty happy with how it turned out. Don’t even need to coat/finish the surface. I bought a trifold 4inch memory foam pad I will throw on top of this.

I’ve tried both foam and air mattress based solution. Foam is very comfortable but it takes a lot of space. Air mattress is not as comfortable but you can reduce it to very small package in the day time.

Yo be honest I am very surprised that after a full year we still can’t find any custom made solution specifically designed for our hybrid LC. Most of the Toyota truck these days has similar gap in the back. GX, Sequoia, 4Runner all face similar situation

They are making them slowly, but it’s pricy for what it is. Here is one example.

I saw their design before. But at $449 I would expect a perfect cut with more modular and foldable design. Otherwise anybody can create an alternative solution at only a small fraction of its asked price.

I usually don’t like to do this but I feel compelled to share my annoyance with the goose gear plate system installation process. All was going fairly smooth until it came to bolting the base plate to the hybrid battery cage. The thread matching is atrocious. I have to assume there’s some kind of metric-standard mismatch going on here but man I’m ready to… do I don’t know what but I’m frustrated 😒

As I get further into this install process, I’m actually impressed by the number of incorrectly sized screws…. And by impressed I mean thoroughly pissed that I can spend over a thousand dollars for this kind of quality
Well, I just got my goose gear rear plate system and I have to agree. I have four main issues and am thoroughly disappointed.

1. My rear foundation plate was made incorrectly, half the holes have the threaded inserts and cutouts on one side and half have them on the other side when they are all supposed to be on the same side in their install instructions. I am waiting for them to contact me back about this because I literally cannot install it without this part being remade.

2. One of the side wings is also the wrong size, I literally have a half inch gap from the side trim to the goose gear wing board when it is supposed to be flush.

3. Two of my pieces are very warped. One of them has a 1/2 inch warp/twist over a 3.5 foot span.

4. Some of my aluminum spacers have notable sharp shards hanging off them. Easy enough to clip off and sand down quickly but for this price you should not have to do this.

Additionally their install instructions show the t track already being installed on the main base plate but two of mine were not installed. To install them I had to uninstall some of the pre-installed t tracks to get it in place. I am sure the person making mine forgot this piece and decided they didn’t want to undo their work to put this piece on so they just tossed it in the box with the hardware. Normally I would not even mention this because it took me five minutes to fix, but at this point I am stunned by the poor quality of the product and experience.

I have two friends with goose gear installs in their jeeps (from years ago) and they are of great quality, they were stunned to see all the issues my kit has. I have to wonder if quality control or quality in general has tanked with Goose Gear.

I will update when I hear back from them.

Very easy to remove one or both of the back seats if you don't need one or both.
Fixes all sleeping issues easily.
Then its whatever is easiest for you to et up and tear down and like most on your trips.
The problem with car camping is the room and convenience issues that always come up on the smaller vehicles, which these are.
