Just a PSA for those who buy OEM parts from Toyota dealers.

Many dealers charge substantially more for parts than Toyota MSRP when you buy the parts in person at the dealer. For example, a cabin filter listed at $37 MSRP at Toyota official website may cost you as much as $50+ if you just show up at a dealer and buy it in person. I have seen this trend time after time, at Toyota and Lexus dealers. Here is how you can protect yourself from price gouging.

This guarantees that you will pay at or below Toyota MSRP. You can probably find the parts cheaper at other outlets like Rockauto, but buying directly from the dealer guarantees that you get the OEM part, and not some counterfeit knockoff in fake Toyota box.

Another thing you can do is to show the MSRP price from the official Toyota website to the salesperson while you are the dealership. In most cases they will (reluctantly) say "OK, I will sell it to you at MSRP". But usually they won't be happy about. Pre-ordering the part(s) online will save you the angry look.

BTW, the same happens when parts are replaced during maintenance or repairs. Dealers frequently apply a surcharge on top of MSRP. If you have a trusted service advisor (and I strongly recommend to build a good relationship with one), he/she will try to correct the issue in the final invoice if you show him/her the MSRP from Toyota website. Sometimes, dealers have a policy of applying a (small) surcharge of 10% or 15% and there is little you can do about it. But knowing the MSRP in advance can save you from paying outrageous markups that can get as high as 100% on some common parts (oil filters, gaskets, etc.)

My local Toyota dealer parts guy told me directly to buy stuff from them online because of this -- the dealership makes them charge more if you go in. That same local dealer usually has at least a 15% discount off MSRP if you buy online! I buy everything from them on their online store and just go pick it up. It's only a problem when some brand new part comes in -- there's often a delay before it shows up in the system Toyota uses for most of their online local parts stores. The rear diff skid plate was lined that. Then it's either pay the markup or go to one of the dealers that has an independent system or someplace like BAM and have it shipped.

Same here, order on line and on a few occasions when I called my local dealer and asked for a quote and mentioned MSRP they matched it and sometimes they didn't.........LOL so then I just placed the order online. In the case of my overtrail Tacoma wheels they matched the online price........ which I was very happy about.

I have had the same experience.

With regards to the Taco wheels, I have been toying with the Trailhunter wheels.

I know it is not quite the same, but I have been hunting for some Lexus GX 550 Overtrail 18” wheels. I got a quote from the Lexus parts counter after finding none for sale locally.

The Lexus partsman put together a quote for a set of five wheels that was surprisingly close to the online price (a few $ per wheel), with the caveat being he could only source three somewhat locally. One would have to come out of eastern Canada and one from SoCal. Compared to shipping five wheels (excessive cost to ship) the parts counter wins.

I was hoping to put together a set of five and dress them in all terrains by fall, so will keep my eyes open for take-offs and revisit the parts counter in a month or two. I’ll be weighing the cost against a set of five all terrains in 20” for my existing wheels, but I would prefer to have the extra sidewall.

Those look really good on that colour combo. The bronze likely doesn’t go as well with Traildust, so as much as I like the look I’ll shoot for something in a dark grey or black.

I was eyeing up the optional ‘24 TRD Tacoma wheels in black also. No idea if the local parts counter is willing to match the online price for five. Swap out the red center caps for bronze or silver variants.
