2024 - Hybrid system malfunction, drive start control malfunction

Hi all, first post here.

Not sure if it's better to start a separate thread with the specifics of my experience, but in short, I also experienced this issue at roughly 14K miles with my 2024 First Edition. Same array of messages and alerts, seemingly out of nowhere.

Toyota ended up replacing several major components, including my entire transmission and hybrid starter, under warranty. The vehicle was returned to me after roughly 4-5 weeks. This was back in May, and I haven't had any major issues since.

Some additional observations:
1.) My MPG has improved noticeably compared to before the work was done.
2.) I had experienced some hard / clunky shifts, particularly at low speed or slowing to a stop. I had hoped those would go away once this issue was addressed. They are certainly less frequent, but I do still experience them.

I will follow up with a scan of the service department's summary of work for reference, in case it would be helpful for anyone experiencing something similar.

Same thing happened to me at 6500mi. I've put about 2700mi on the new transmission now, working as expected, but every time i feel a rough shift my eyes go to the dash to see if the malfunctions pop up again.

Welcome to the asylum Cowboy22.

A recent video by The Car Care Nut mentioned that the weird braking behavior in Toyota hybrids is due to the car switching from regenerative braking to hydraulic braking as the hybrid is slowing down.

The weird braking behavior I've experienced cannot possibly be by design, it seems to have something to do with downshifts being poorly timed, and I have to assume the torque converter is related (and likely transmission solenoid, per the below).

Got mine in a few days ago for the three codes referenced in the original post, and they indicated it was the transmission solenoid that threw the codes. Said that it likely had something to do with shifting into 1st and 2nd (possibly 3rd), and matches the symptoms I reported last time the truck was in for oil, but of course they couldn't duplicate it. Sounds like this may get escalated by the dealer since my prior reports matched the codes, said it was ok to drive. "ok" [eyeroll]

I'd really like Toyota to know the fix is going to work prior to winging it with replacing stuff. Seems like a handful of transmissions have been replaced, and would love to see a TSB documenting what is going on. Prior to this, only issue I've had after 10k miles was one dead battery while camping, and of course there were no codes for them to find. Nothing I did caused the battery depletion.

Report of transmission trouble in someoneโ€™s new 6th gen 4Runner:

3 weeks and 922 miles is all I got out of my brand new 2026 LC.
Dealerships says a faulty solenoid is to blame. Needs new transmission, which are on backorder. No ETA available.
I've been a loyal Toyota owner for 20+ years due to their reliability. This is the first new vehicle I've ever purchased and I'm heartbroken.

For a company who's name commands respect due to their attention to quality control, this is beyond disappointment. The real kicker is its been a known issue for years and no one seems to care. They're going to put a new transmission, torque converter, and hybrid module in it, and replace the faulty solenoid with the exact same part.

If the factory workers who install thousands of transmission every week can't get it right, I certainly don't want to pay new car prices for a frankenstein rebuilt by dealership technicians who told me they've never installed a transmission on a LC.

A vehicle not useable for more than 30 days is considered a lemon in the state where I purchased it, so I'll be demanding a refund.

Makes me miss my numerous old rigs with the 22R-E.

Just trying to decide what better options are out there for a SUV I can use for work and play, that will last me hundreds of thousands of miles.

Has anyone else moved on, and if so what did you wind up getting?

The sad part is, as you mentioned, a known issue, and Toyota has yet to solve the problem. Or, if the case, and even more tragic, Toyota is willing to accept a set percentage of this failure.

Man that sucks! As you aren't the only one that's has had this exact thing happen, I'm curious if it's a case of a bad batch of solenoids from a supporting vender as there are thousands of LC's that seem to be operating properly.

Welcome to the Asylum.

Yea, the solenoid is a know issue. It could happen to any of us, and if it happened to me, I would still keep Miss Daisy. I am sorry it happened to you.

Yes, a few members have moved on for various reasons. Including the tranny solenoid.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

Yeah its baffling that they can justify a $15,000 repair over and over again for a bad $200 part. I guess the math works for them

Thats exactly what I asked the service manager at the dealership - are you going to replace the solenoid with the exact same part from the same supplier? The bad part they gave you is costing you a five figure repair.
He didn't understand my concern.

Once the dust settles, I'll probably stay with Toyota. I just a little sore at the moment haha

This problem has got to be costing Toyota a fortune. Certainly they have top engineers and analyst working hard to resolve this quickly.
Good to have this thread for others who may run into this. So service dept. folks don't give others the run around on this serious issue.

I bought a 100 series land cruiser. Seems like nothing new from anyone is built very well nowadays. Good luck with your buy back, sorry you had the trouble.

New member here. Just adding a data point since I just joined the Bad Transmission Club with a 2025 LC at 16,000 miles. Pretty much the same symptoms as others reported above. What's interesting is the service advisor told me they've seen "a few" Land Cruisers that needed complete transmission replacements.

Got these rolling pop-ups:
  • Hybrid System Malfunction
  • Drive-Start Control System Malfunction
  • Secondary Collision Brake System Malfunction
  • System Malfunction
  • Check Engine
Lots of orange lights on the dashboard and no cruise control but it drove. No abrupt shifts that I noticed.
