Team,

Lately I’ve been hearing a wind-related noise at highway speed - 75 MPH and above. It’s coming from the right side, maybe just above the windshield.

The trim that sits in the channel where the roof rails go has a head piece that runs right up to the windshield. That head piece is loose enough that at speed some wind could get underneath it and cause it to flap and flutter. My theory presently is that this is where the noise is coming from. Maybe for some reason the equivalent piece on the left (drivers) side isn’t quite as loose.

Anyone else experiencing this, and possibly developed a solution?

i am thinking that some of the front end noise comes from the 1/4" gaps between the windshield trim and the windshield itself.

stumbled across these and debating trying them out. for less than $20, i'll be a guinea pig

there are a couple variations of this out there.

that being said, the side mirrors are giant bricks(our entire vehicle is a giant brick), and i have FE roof rack and that thing is not quiet up there either. GL

Thanks. Let me know how you do.

The trim piece you circled should not be loose. Verify that the clip isn't broken, as mine flew off the roof. Properly secured, I don't think this could make a noticeable amount of noise over the brick shaped mirrors and car body.

Not loose in the sense that it isn’t properly affixed with the connections that are present. Loose in the sense that there is enough space underneath the piece for 80 MPH air to get in there and cause trouble.

You would be surprised how much noise a little piece can make in that much wind if it’s given the opportunity to move.

The mirrors make a different kind of sound.

Just a thought but did you check the tightness of crossbars?

I took a chance on these and don't regret the purchase. I think they do help buffer the turbulence when driving in head and crosswinds. There is another post on here regarding these silicone trim pieces.

I have to admit, these seem kind of silly. But once I realized how big the gap is between the windshield and the trim I just wanted to fill the void so crap wouldn't accumulate.

Now that I have had them in for a few weeks with a couple rainy weekend road trips, they have held up well and anecdotally speaking, seem to make a small difference when it is windy out.

Not gonna lie, just a couple days of driving with these inserts and i am perceiving less wind noise... i have no way to quantify it, or measure it, but drove to work and back with the radio off and i swear it is quieter... worth the $20 in my opinion
