Rear Hatch Struts

Has anyone found any heavier-duty rear hatch struts for the LC 250 (1958)? Added a Prinsu Ladder and the hatch won't stay open anymore...

I don't have the ladder but I wish I could change mine as well to go higher on the 58.

If there was an aftermarket solution for stronger and or higher struts, I would jump on it.

Thanks! They should fit, but they are significantly more expensive. I’m confident there will be aftermarket ones in the future, as they were for my 5th gen 4Runner. Joys of having a first year model!?

Pretty sure assisted struts have motors built in.

Hello, first post here. Love the truck but did notice manual lift gate struts are weak. Dealer said today mine were same as new struts on showroom LC’s. Any ideas for an aftermarket upgrade? Thanks

Just my opinion............ If the struts are keeping the hatch open, what's the point of putting stronger struts on.

The con in putting stronger struts on, requires more force to close them, that force transfers to the mount, which in turn transfers to the body sheet metal, over time that could lead to fatigue and cracking/tear out.

I see where you’re coming from. I use it daily and opens to about my chin and I lift manually the rest of the way manually. (I’m 6’5”} I guess I’m used to my 4Runner where it just popped all the way open fast.

Unfortunately I have still been unable to find stronger struts for the LC. I’m almost ready to remove my Prinsu ladder until they are available!

You might try giving these guys a call. To be transparent, I've never used them but many strut suppliers, when you explain what you are looking for, can offer solutions (at least that was my experience when obtaining some non-existent boat hatch struts)

Since we are talking about rear struts,.. a very long time friend of mine bought a ‘24 SR5 4Runner. She has terrible rheumatoid arthritis in her hands, and using her rear hatch is painful.

Does anyone know if the manual lift struts on a 4Runner can be switched out for the electric lifts in the higher end Toyotas? It would certainly make it easier and less painful on her hands.

If it was ever an OEM option, then yes, the issue would be the electronics (limit switches/resistance values). The entire system could be retro fitted but would probably be expensive for the labor. I have seen aftermarket kits but have no info on them.

Here's the heavy-duty strut, recommended by Westcott Designs. You'll need to order two. I just installed it, and it's definitely stronger than OEM. I still need to test it out in elevation and the cold, so will report back on it.
