I recently purchased a 2027 Toyota Land Cruiser. Unfortunately, due to limited inventory in my area, I had to compromise on a few options to get a vehicle that was otherwise close to what I wanted.

One of those options was the more aggressive Toyota roof rack. I personally prefer the cleaner, more streamlined look of the factory roof rails that come on most Land Cruisers.

I contacted my Toyota dealer about swapping out the rack for the standard roof rails, only to learn that Toyota doesn’t offer them as an accessory. Instead, they have to be purchased individually through the parts department, including every bolt, cap, bracket, and stanchion (a term I wasn’t even familiar with before going down this rabbit hole!).

By the time everything was added up, the cost was nearly $2,000, which is pretty hard to justify for what should be a relatively simple swap.

I even reached out to Toyota Corporate, but unfortunately, they were no help.

Has anyone else run into this issue? If so, how did you resolve it? I’m curious whether anyone has found a more practical or affordable way to make the switch while maintaining the factory look.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Welcome,

2025 1958 here. Interested in the same. Others here will tell us to search this answer up, b/c it already exists. But they also will want to welcome a new member w/ friendly answers!

So I'll tag on this question while they're at it -- what is the MPG improvement one might experience by swapping out that First Edition OEM roof rack like yours for a more traditional roof rack w/ cross bars (as you are asking)?

Welcome! Check out the marketplace forum, you’ll often find folks who went with aftermarket racks selling their OEM rails on the cheap: 🏪 Land Cruiser Forum Marketplace

I held onto mine, because like you I think they look so much better than more utility-focused systems. The clean look of just the OEM side rails is perfection in my eye!

Like it or not, there is a big difference between asking a very common question that has been answered 100 times before, and thereby diluting the accessibility of those answers, and asking a more nuanced question like this one. It doesn’t hurt my feelings that you would chalk it up to members being pretentious, but that label fails to acknowledge the real reason why asking questions with easily searched answers negatively impacts the ability of future members to access those answers.

To answer your actual question posed from my perspective and experience, I saw about .5 to 1 MPG loss going from a naked roof to the OEM roof rack. That is a pretty low bar to try and improve upon.

Yes, like mentioned ^^^ its been discussed. Best to mod yourself as some have done and just leave the rails...
The search tool has answers to questions.

Hi everyone, Thank you for the help and the welcome. I apologize for my clumsiness in posting in the wrong area. I get it - it can be annoying and certainly did not intend to come across as someone with a unique problem. I should have done a search first. Regardless I appreciate the welcome and hope everyone has a great weekend!

Welcome to the asylum @jschrag.

Best I could tell, I gained 0.5 to 1.5 MPG by removing Miss Daisy's First Edition roof top air brake/noise generator. Miss Daisy is also much quieter without said noise generator. I don't miss it. Since turning 70, I've noticed that I have lost ~1+" of height, down to 6' now. Even if I hadn't shrunk, it would have been dang near impossible for me to use my Yakima ski box due to the height of Miss Daisy. She is a tall girl.

For what it's worth I found a very nice, I'd say nearly identical version of the factory roof rails on Amazon for under 200 bucks. I know that's not for everyone, but I didn't like the fe rack and I wanted to try the look of the rails without the big expense. It looks great!
