MPGs - Many People Griping - A Foundational Knowledge Primer To Assist in Better Efficiency

In October, my wife and I drove my 2024 1958 LC across the US from NC to AZ and back, trying to mostly avoid Interstate highways (we like the byways and visiting small towns in this country!). We had a reasonable load of suitcases and other small stuff. We probably averaged around 65-70 mph outside of towns and cities. I have experimented putting it in "Normal" outside of town on highways, some Interstate and some 2 or 4 lanes, and in towns if I thought about it, I usually set it to "Eco." for the entire trip I set the mpg calc when we left and did not reset it until we got home, and we averaged 24.5 mpg. I tried to use an average 91 octane fuel (I offset 94 octane with 89 octane fuel once in a while to keep the average around 91). 91 octane is hard to find here in central NC, since most available premium is 94 octane. Out west I found 91 pretty much always available. We drove a total of 5,470 miles in 3-1/3 weeks on the road and changed the oil once (I try to change the oil and filter every 5000 miles). No problems with the engine or drive system, and I will take it in this week for the 20,000 mile service. I am very happy with the vehicle, and I get significantly better mileage than my 5th gen 4Runner, which we took on a similar trip 2 years ago. Obviously it gets better mileage when on fairly flat terrain than up and down mountains and big hills. Low altitude above sea level gives us a bit better mileage than flat terrain at high altitude, but I think the computer mostly corrects fuel mix for altitude. Here in NC at lower altitudes on the open road, I can get as much as 30 mpg, if I am not lead footed, and keeping the speed down to below 65 mph. It is interesting to experiment. We also have the road tires on it still and we have the standard roof rack and the step rails for the 1958 LC, which probably affect mpg especially at highway speeds.

Just completed a 1,500 mile round trip from Michigan to Georgia.

Averaged 22mpg for the trip.

Always use premium gas.

265/70-18 Bridgestone Dueler A/T tires at 34psi.

1958 Edition - no roof rack.

Maintained highway speeds of 72-75mph and used ECO mode.

Very happy with this Land Cruiser for long trips - comfortable, smooth and safe.

How do you like the ride quality of the Dueler A/T tires?

Please keep us posted on how they do in the snow and ice.
Ride quality has been great - quiet & smooth on the highway.

They seem to work well in snow & ice so far, we just got 12" of snow here in SW lower Michigan.

AT tires are great in deep snow but its the hardpack, icy roads where they can't remotely compete with winter rubber. And those are the conditions that catch you out!!! Even the stock Yokos (M&S) couldn't remotely touch the new Michelin X Ice tires. The difference is significant.

On our recent trip to see the redwoods, I stopped at a Les Schwab tire center in Caldwell, Idaho, and had Miss Daisyโ€™s OEM Michelinโ€™s siped. I havenโ€™t had to test them on snow and ice yet, but the siping makes a night and day difference on snow and ice. My next set if tires for Miss Daisy WILL be the Bridgestone Duelers AT Ascents.

Interesting thread. the decision on mode selection. Eco, sport, and normal. The ECU in each unit, whether LC or 1958 reacts with commands to drive train. With the price of fuel as it has been leveled or even coming down. We have the options to choose....

As much as saving some money at the gas pump is great and good for the environ. Its still a free world for most of us to enjoy motoring as we please. So enjoy the ride, its all good with a solid machine.

IMHO............ Everybody wishes the LC got 30 MPG, but that's just wishful thinking.
Few people will permanently alter their driving habits in order to achieve maximum MPG.
Many people will explain why some get better or worse MPG and what others should do to fix it.
Many more will just complain about something................
The rest of us just enjoy our LCs and look fly while doing it.
I'm just now seeing this post @EOD Guy . I love the "look fly" reference. Definitely showing your generation. I do think your rig is all that AND a bag of chips. :D

I sometimes try to maximize the mileage just for the heck of it, and 30 mpg over a 25 mile trip is about the max for me. Usually I can get about 28 mpg over that trip. It depends upon how many stops I have to make. Lots of things reduce the mileage - Air Conditioning being big, but speed is the main thing that reduces mileage for me. I still have the original tires which helps. These are getting long in the tooth, so I will probably get all terrain tires next, which I know will reduce my mileage.

I have done 30 a bunch of times. In fact, I have done 34.5 too. However, those driving behind me honked so much, I had to alter my ways
