Land Cruiser key?

OK, I always like to have a hidden key in a magnetic key box under the rear bumper. With the LC, I bought a key blank (looks like the slide-out key) $30 from the Toyota dealer who then cut a new door key for me which I hide under the car. Granted, this only gets me into the car.

Been surfing for over a decade and can count on 3 hands how many cars I've known of/seen get stolen with keys in lock boxes...then again thats usually in peak tourist season in San Diego so its not really as big of a year-round concern.

I've had this same issue getting in for surf too. Gonna try turning the key fob off and see how it goes.

Not a surfer, but I know a guy........LOL Curious if the credit card key could be placed in a water proof pouch and tucked into your trunks. Again have zero knowledge on surfing apparel.

Fellow San Diego surfer here - I got a few of the “slide out keys” (the small metal ones that pop out of the bigger key fob) and I keep that on my while I surf.

For the key fob - I hit lock a few times (1 is never enough!) and then throw it in faraday bag. Hit the auto hatch close button and head to surf - always waiting to see it beep that it’s locked and have the mirrors fold in.

OK great information. I did not like the alarm going off each time I used the key and all the attention it created. So thank you for the tip!

I didn’t see this part of the thread in my last response but… the annoying alarm going off can be solved by - when you go to unlock the car post surf with the metal key (and you locked with the fob pre surf) all you do is turn key to unlock position (alarm goes off), immediately turn to lock and then turn to unlock again. The car alarm will beep maybe once in this process but it doesn’t sound all that different than when you are unlocking the car anyway.

Typing this all out - I wonder if I can cut it down 1 step with just doing lock, unlock motion post surf… will report back!

hehe yea most folks ive known will keep the thin metal key off the fob in their trunks. Did that for years with a Rav4 and no rusting or anything!

Do you lock with the manual key? Or with the fob when you head out?

Lock with the key fob, then toss it in the faraday bag. I’ve been doing this for over a year with no issues - except the cheap faraday bags from Amazon seemed to stop working after a while. I recently got the slnt bag and it works really well.

I have tested the doors too and they are locked for sure - have tried all 4.

Curiosity got the best of me so I tried an experiment..........

With the lock sequence set to "Dvr's door only" (OEM setting):
Locking with the FOB and unlocking with the manual key = alarm (but not every time)
Locking with the FOB and lock then unlock with the manual key = no alarm

With the lock sequence set to "All Doors":
Locking with the FOB and unlocking with the CC manual key = no alarm
Locking with the manual key and unlocking with the manual key = no alarm
