Wanting to get away from mounting tape as my sole support for my dashcam as currently it seems to un-adhere from the windshield after a day in the sun, alternatively, find another solution (see loctite mention below).

Are there any hardware solutions for mounting existing dashcams for near the top of the passenger windshield area?

Setup:
  • LC parked in direct sunlight frequently in Southern California, sometimes Arizona
  • BlackVue DR970X-2CH LTE Plus dashcam, weighing 2.15lbs.
  • Windshield Tint: Ceramic tint on the windshield (XPel XR Plus Ceramic Series) -- cause of my issue? Non-optimal adhesion?
  • Gorilla Heavy Duty Double Sided Mounting Tape ("in-use temp. up to 248F"
    • Considered using LOCTITE 402 Ultra Performance between the tape and the windshield, but fear this could screw up the tint, void its warranty, then fall off anyway (open to feedback here)

For my good mate's car, we gorilla-glued a magnet to the mount and then gorilla-glued a magnet to the windshield. He's had it this way for six years now. Same dashcam as you.
I'd love to understand the science behind why that works well vs my setup. Either way that's a super interesting idea and a helpful one too.

I guess I'd only be worried about the off chance of the sudden impact or shock of the magnets coming together causing a crack. Good food for thought regardless, Thanks!

2lbs is heavy for a double stick solution in the hot sun. That said, look for other high-strength mounts. They're not all the same.

These super strong magnets only pull away when tilt the camera and takes extreme pressure to separate them.

Yeah, it is heavy. This was the strongest double sided stuff I could find, they advertise 60 pounds, but I understand, heat isn’t helping that spec.

Not sure where exactly you are trying to mount it. You could fab a mount/tab that could sandwich between the sun visor mount and the headliner or remove the trim cover from the upper grab handle bolt and fab a mount using the bolt to anchor your new mount.

Check out "The Dashcam Store" thedashcamstore.com. They have a lot of alternative windshield mounts.

Ideally mounted the top left-most quadrant on passenger side, closest to the mirror assembly. But will take what I can get.

Both good ideas. Was just wondering about a sun visor option just like you mentioned. I need to just skill up on 3d printing already, feels like this could be a good use case.

Curious about the second idea too. Guess I’d be a bit concerned about the airbag throwing that 2lb dashcam at me though if in an accident, not sure.
Thank you!!

Super curious about the Blendmount (specialty) this website sells. Wouldn’t be too excited to put more mass in the center like they do, but looks like it would work / fit. Thank you!

It would be a royal pain and require a lot of time and some skills............ you could drop the headliner, put a nut-zert in the metal panel, just rear of the windshield (same panel that the sun visor and overhead console is mounted to) and fab a tab that exits between the windshield and the headliner. After the headliner is reinstalled the tab could be used to mount your dash cam. Removing the headliner is a major under taking and not for the faint of heart!

For what it is worth, I used the same mounting tape with a similar BlackVue on my old Honda Ridge (and my wife's current Chevrolet Bolt EUV) both never had any issues. Potentially if you are in Florida or the Southwest the temps are higher.

An alternative I would look at is the foam double sided tape?

While I find this solution solid and fascinating, as soon as a read “drop the headliner” I think I tapped out . However, if there’s a freak reason I end doing that some day I will 100% remember this. Could be a nice mount point in general.

Just cut your losses and get the Fit cam x. You'll forget it's even there until you need it.
It is tempting.
I was between my Blackvue, a Thinkware, and fit cam x. I chose Blackvue because of the ability to use LTE and its Sony Starvis 2 sensor for the imagery. But Fit Cam X wins as far as fit and finish, obviously.

BlackVue DR970X-2CH LTE Plus dashcam, weighing 2.15lbs.

That might be the shipping weight of the box in comes in, but there's absolutely no way the front dashcam unit weighs that much.

Edit: DR970X-2CH LTE Plus (GL)

Product DimensionsFront: Black / 137.6(L) x 60.3(W) x 43(H) mm / 175 g
Rear:
Black / 67.3(L) x 28(W) x 25(H) mm / 25 g

I have had my Blackvue camera for almost 4 years now. Took a bit of effort getting it out and into the Prado. Used the adhesive strips it came with.

You're right. Not sure why I didn't second guess that on copy/paste. I do know that it feels much heavier than my Blackvue DR900X, which has stayed on fine.

The initial adhesive I had failed me previously, though, I used an installer over there in Arizona, maybe they swapped it out with cheap stuff. I do know they added some glass adhesive of sorts that was supposed to help, which would've been fine since they, in theory, should be used to what works / doesn't work in the heat there, of all places.

Maybe I'll contact Blackvue and ask exactly what VHB strips they send out and give it another shot before using a hardware bracket solution.

It is heavy, that's true, though I was far wrong on the weight as member Piggy pointed out. I haven't weighed it but I think the product info he pasted in seems accurate: 175 g / or over 6oz.

Regardless, I like the features and quality of this camera and right now, feel more like fighting this battle over trying to sell it to recoup my cost while I'm still trying to sell the stock roof rails, running boards, and wheels and tires 🥲. But point taken, fitcamx is my plan C just behind a Blendmount solution.
