Fishing with Land Cruisers

Is a weight forward line a sinking one?

I may need more of a variety, right now I'm just throwing a shrimp looking one, but they're feeding on finger mullet right now
Weight forward (WF) is in reference to the fly line taper. While most sinking lines and saltwater lines are WF tapers, floating lines also come in WF. WF tapers are best for casting heavy flies and casting in the wind.

If you’re fishing relatively shallow water off the beach or on the flats, your leader and a weighted fly will provide enough “sink” to get your fly down to the fish. Many saltwater lines are intermediate lines meaning they sink but at a slower rate than a dedicated sinking line. Also easier to cast.

Yes.. the end of the line sinks,.. it’s all I’ve ever used in salt water..

See if you can find clouser minnows.. I have never tried shrimp flies, etc. but I am sure there are those who know a Lot more than I do.

I feel like I may have stumbled on a wealth of flyfishing knowledge on here 😂

So my issue is I run into a lot of wind, about 15mph on avg. So I try and stand deeper and cast with the wind, but would love to cast into the wind

May try out a forward weighted line that's sinking, so that theres more weight to cast into the wind.... is that the right approach?

I think so, but a good fly shop may have good info as well.

There are also different types of sinking lines -

That being said, you probably only need a floating line and an intermediate sinking line when fishing from the beach.

I’ve caught stripers, snook, ladyfish, sea trout and Spanish mackerel from the beach. Shooting for a redfish and tarpon next.

For redfish, I’m usually thinking crab and shrimp patterns along with clouser minnows. Unfortunately my last guided trip where I hoped to be able to target redfish on a fly turned into light tackle spinning when it was too windy the day of the trip. Still caught fish, so it didn’t matter. As a matter of fact, I just got a saltwater travel spinning rod, as it never fails that the winds pick up on vacation so I want to make sure I can fish no matter what.

As ultane said, a good shop can get you set up. The proper equipment will go a long way. That said, I have good gear but spend 99% of my time casting less that 30 ft to trout on light rods. When I get to the salt I play the wind like you and am constantly reminded that I did not practice enough with my salt gear in the wind before the fish of a lifetime is tailing 60 ft upwind from me. One last word of caution, the entry level equipment in fly shops these days is better than the top end gear from 40 years ago and plenty of anglers were making presentations back then I could never make with today’s best kit. It’s the angler, not the rod. Don’t let the shop tell you different.

With regards to casting- have you learned to double haul? Unfortunately there’s no double haul button on the the LC.

Check out this video-

I still suck at it, but when I do get the timing right it’s very satisfying- I equate it to hitting a good drive in golf.

Feel free to DM me- been flyfishing and tying flies for years. I can send you down lots of rabbit holes.

I haven't heard of that before, that's really interesting. I wondered how people would cast for bone fish in the bahamas - I bet this is implemented, I need to practice this technique

I've been getting bored with my regular surf and shark fishing - and now your re-igniting that flyfishing fire I had!

To get my confidence up, I may look for fish with my spinning reels, and when I do find an area, break out the fly rod... can't wait to start exploring this some more 👍

Finally got the LC out for a proper fly fishing adventure! Near Sun Valley, ID.

Went yesterday... did not hardly even notice I was towing anything (weight is ~500 lbs.). I did use 'Tow' mode although not sure it was entirely necessary.

The interior rack is a Trout Mount. This model is way overkill for what I normally do, but it works well. The rod on the left is a 10' rod. It fit's with no issue. The holder on the window just flips up when not in use. I use the rear view camera instead of the mirror, so no issues with that either.

Hi @D-Train , can you post a link for the rod holder??? Thanks!!!

FYI.. the suction cups do work on the rear glass, but it held the rack pretty low and too far forward. I used the bendable holders on the grab handles and that worked well to keep the rear bar up and out of the way. The front holder flips up when not in use, so I just let it stay there. I don't have a roof rack, and I didn't want to listen to more wind noise from an exterior rod holder. So far, happy with the set-up!
