Awning…yes or no?

Have you noticed any rattling on the road? I just installed mine (7ft) and the rattling on uneven/cracks on the road is pretty substantial.

I have the 5ft Crosswing with the side mounts because I wanted to use it on my OEM Toyota Rack. I did have some noise, but I was able to reduce and minimize this noise with some easy modifications:

1. With the OEM roof rack, I purchased an additional crossrail so the awning could be more evenly supported on both ends (see photo)
2. I put heat shrink tubing over the bolts which ride in the slot on top of the mounts - this removed the metal on metal contact and tightened up the small amount of play between the rack mount and the awning mount. (see photos)
3. I put an adhesive foam pad (like for the bottom of chair legs) on top of one of the crossbeams so when the awning was closed, the two crossbars didn't bang into each other. This seems effective but I would recommend something a bit more firm as the foam pad compresses over time. Some 3M adhesive 1/8" inch neoprene would probably be better. (see photos). You do have to be careful when closing the awning because the pad is in the way when the crossbars rub against each other to close. You have to lift one of the crossbars up a bit as you close it up.

I am mostly happy with how this turned out.

The only other thing I wonder about is maybe putting a third sidemount in the center to reduce any additional bounce that may still be happening, but I haven't yet. This third mount would need to have the heat shrink installed too.

No rattle on mine. I also have the 5 foot.

One thing to make sure is when you put it away, make sure it is retracted straight in. If it is offset, it could rattle. Also, use the tensioner to remove the slack when you put it away. If you just retract it and dont do that, it can rattle.

I have an ARB 2.5m on my FJ that I've used for years. I camp mostly in the Alberta foothills that can get pretty severe winds. Trips to deserts, it's been a life saver. It's pretty easy to set up and take down, even alone but I would say that anything over about 30kph (18mph) where it isn't staked down you "takes your chances" as they say." I have the Overland Vehicle Systems 180 Nomadic on the LC and it's my go to. Super sturdy and very easy to set up and take down. With the OVS I just fold it shut if the wind gets too much. With the ARB it's more of a pain. Wind noise with both is minimal.

Yeah, that is what mine did before I did the modifications I listed earlier. Realize the noise doesn't all come from inside the awning housing as some of it is from the mounting hardware having some play in it (hence the need for the heatshrink on the metal on metal parts).
