I was looking for something quite specific, so I worked with the team at 97 customs (Home) to do a custom build. I did a coast-to-coast last year with an ARB fridge and it was really great to have a fridge, but just a huge pain to get into. With the raised hybrid floor and top opening (and the lid didn't fully open with the roof getting in the way) - we really wanted to have a sliding drawer fridge for the trip this year. Plus with leaving space around the fridge for ventilation - a cooler style fridge takes up a huge amount of space. Cooking and storage will be a lot more convenient and organized with this system. I also did a seat-delete and a sleeper.
The went with hex board - it has marine grade glue and has a good weight and value. Nice carrying handles to get it in/out of car easily with 2 people.
Since there is a fridge running on one side - their 3D design incorporated ventilation in the back.
This is the fridge fan - there is a gap in the drawer to draw in cooler air.
The box itself is connected via the built-in vehicle tie-downs. There is a slotted hole to adjust how far back to slide - there is a slight recess in the rear hatch itself, so it tucks in with just a cm. of space left over with the drawers installed.
I kept the distance where the seats could recline comfortably and the rear compartments were still accessible. Here is the machine at work precision cutting the panels! This is why it looks nothing like the sleeper I made for my 105 series with a table saw...
It wasn't really going to work to keep the front panels accessible, but the measurements are such that the rear panels are fully accessible (this is where your jack kit is, if you haven't needed it yet!).
The team at 97 Customs made a custom metal drawer on the bottom to house a stove. This is the low-profile Pinnacle Pro 2 stove (Pinnacle Pro 2 Burner Camping Stove | GSI Outdoors). They 3D printed little holders and riveted them to the metal tray. There also clever notches in the 3D printed pieces to set the legs of the stove once opened.
The tray for the stove is a separate mechanism from the main drawer, which slides out and has a cutting table and storage compartments. It's nice to have the stove low with the raised hybrid bed.
The butcher cutting board also slides out and there is an extra compartment below. The panel for the drawer I got from shutterstock - they are able to cut out any vector graphic - I got this one off shutterstock printed to the drawer front (One Continuous Line Drawing Mountain Range Stock Vector (Royalty Free) 2184071887 | Shutterstock).
The fridge - this is slightly a smaller than the ARB and doesn't go as cold (we don't use it to freeze anyway), but it's so nice. It's an Engel SB30 (Engel SB30 Drawer Style 12/24V DC Only Fridge-Freezer). It has a really low draw - I sort of gave up trying to get a Dometic. At least here in Canada it was not easy to get a 12V only version and I didn't want to buy the expensive that also ran 120V. There was an IronMan one, but I didn't like the reviews. 97 Customs actually brought in this Engel fridge - it's got a great compressor that can handle rugged environments and being on angles as it will be. Just needs some dividers.
Also, in this photo you can see the turnbuckle that connects to the other attachment point.
I only wanted to use the 40 (of the 60/40) split on the back. That's so my passenger has drink holders (I've removed the other seat for space). You can see here it has little wings to capture a bit more space. It's a really sturdy platform with hinges. It can be disconnecte and lay sideways across the main box.
Here's how it looks with all slides extended:
Lastly - just how it looks with fridge side open:
I haven't paid for it yet, so not sure the final cost. It's been a real pleasure to work with the team at 97 Customs. They have all the expertise (and measurements) to build out one for you, too. It can be customized for your needs. If you don't want a fridge, cutting board, or built-in stove tray, etc - those are all optional. You can also do a full sleeper.
If you have any questions or would like to see certain photos or measurements don't hesitate to ask.
