I just took the TPM sensor out of my 20” spare to sell with my other 20” take-offs.

Looking to replace my spare and trying to decide whether to order a matching 18” TRD wheel or just a tundra steelie. What are everyone’s thoughts on 5 tire rotations as stated in the owner manual vs regular 4 tire rotation and spare for purely emergencies?

Slightly concerned about the wear and tear of 5 tire rotations on the center caps and wheel paint. Already have a few marks where Discount Tire knicked the TRD wheels putting them on….

Possibly outdated wisdom, but I always rotate tires so they will turn in the same direction, i.e. front-rear. Would this even be possible rotating five? I think not.

I think so 😁

Interesting that they recommend this rotation, seems off balance as two tires will wear faster than the other 3.

I was planning on the rearward cross like this diagram:
I found this from the LC100 manual. So many different variations that it's confusing:

I've never done a 5 tire rotation. My thought process is, when the 4 get close to the wear indicator, I replace all 4 tires. It may not be what everyone does but it works for me.

I’ve always crossed and done 5 tire. As long as you’re consistent it shouldn’t have a massively different impact.

Personally I choose 5 tire because I never know if I’m going with the same brand/tread etc tire, and I have my spare typically on the rear door. Makes it so I replace all 5 at the same time and not wasting a brand new tire to cater to my OCD having them match.

I would wait until all 4 tires are worn and then replace all 4 tires.

Use the spare and place the 1 of the wheel with new tires as spare.

Continue this cycle everything you get new tires.

Due to previous owners of my 2012 FJ cruiser never doing a five tire rotation, I have a 12 year-old spare on the back. Due to age and dry rot and other things, I don’t think I would trust it as far as I could throw it. When I replace the four tires, I will replace the spare also with the same type and do a five tire rotation going forward.

Like I said ..... not for everyone, but it works for me.

if you have a matching set of 5, there is zero reason to a 4 tire rotation. Tires have a lifespan, even if they have 0 miles, and you should replace your spare tire at the same time, you might as well get some life out of it. I don't know why anyone would be adamant on keeping them rotating the same direction, unless of coarse they are directional tires.
