4Runner Off Road iForce Max Review

The 4Runner review embargo was lifted today so we’ll see a bunch of reviews published today.

Car And Driver seemed pretty positive about the 4Runner in theres. The negatives being that it loses its luster once you get into the higher trim prices. They think the sweet spot for a 4Runner would be the 50k 4x4 TRD Off Road with no hybrid. You can almost get a 1958 for that.

Motor Trends reviews are pretty glowing as well for the TRD Pro and Trailhunter.
Negatives being the hybrid battery taking up so much room in the back and the price.

Most everything about it seems great, but no big surprises since Toyota is using the same formula and platform for all of its off-road vehicles.

I'm a huge 4Runner fan but I don't like the looks of this new model. So bulbous. Doesn't do it for me. Maybe it will grow on me a bit, probably after I see it lifted and tricked out with big tires, I'm a sucker for that.

with all things being nearly identical between the new 4runner and LC250, i am actually upset we don't have all of these camera features the 4runner has. it's just software Toyota, so why didn't we get the expanded view options on the bottom? Ours is a little dumbed down. this is from the Doug DeMuro review. I want those angle views

That's a lot of camera options. I don't know...I am rather fine with what we have. Our visibility is pretty darn good.

Those are present on the LC but you need to press camera button to cycle through them.

What I am annoyed about is that their center screen and GPS is not laggy. Ours feels like it was built in 1998.

And...assuming you want the hybrid, the gap in price is much closer.

I had been following news of the "new" 4Runner for a while, ever since the rumors of a new generation with the new powertrain was coming, and was quite interested. When the details of the new J250 Land Cruiser coming to the US was announced, obviously I also took notice of that, but wanted to also wait for more details on the 4R.

However, once I was able to better compare the two, I definitely preferred the overall look of the LC... once the announcement of the various trim levels and pricing last year was revealed, and it become apparent that the 1958 LC was pretty much on the same level as a comparable 4R trim with i-force-max hybrid (Since I'd be looking at a TRD off-road hybrid at minimum), I pretty much made up my mind at that time.

Not that it was a slam dunk, I'm sure I'd be just as happy with a new 4Runner as well, and there are some 4Runner features I'd probably prefer over the Land Cruiser...but in the end, for specifically what I wanted, I realized it was basically going to come down to which one I liked better aesthetically, and thus pulled the trigger on my 1958 LC.

I’ve owned three 4Runners since 1998 and still the original owner of a 2006 V8 Sports edition but decided to upgrade to the LCLC. This has been a major technological upgrade for me.
