2025 slams on brakes, even with sensors disabled

2025 Land Cruiser
Coming from an 07 FJ, I’ve found myself to be outsmarted by all the new options of my 2025 Land Cruiser. So, before I contact the dealer, was curious if anyone had any thoughts about a backup sensor issue with towing.

First day I towed I was learning all the bells and whistles. While I put it in tow/haul mode, I did not disable any sensors so….of course is slammed on the brakes when backing up. Eventually I found the button on the lefthand side to disable the park assist, and I towed for several days with no issues.

Fast forward a few weeks and I went to tow again (again in tow/haul) and pressing the park assist button off no longer prevented the brakes from being engaged. I read the manual and saw that if you use a 7-pin light connector then many sensors would automatically be disabled. So, I found an adaptor and many sensors did indeed disable immediately…once. But then it still slammed on the brakes. I then put the 4-pin back in and turned all sensors off and then one by one turned them on to try to pinpoint the problematic sensor. I then couldn’t get it to slam on the brakes if I tried.

I then put it back in with the 7-pin and now one of the sensors automatically turned off as before. I did all sorts of fidgeting with sensors, turning things on and off….and it just seems very sporadic as to what does and does not prevent the car from automatically braking with the trailer attached.

It feels like a call to the dealer is in order, but just trying to make sure I am not being outsmarted by my own car.

not towing, but i was backing out of a tight spot and my friend was standing behind the car that was parked next to me and i got a beep from the sensors because it detected something then a second later BAM! it slammed on the brakes and no other people or cars were nearby. he looked at me like i was crazy but i explained the car did itself. kinda embarrassing actually but i didn't have anything disabled either. i think all safety nannies are too sensitive TBH

The reason a 7-pin auto-disables the anti-reverse mode ........... electric trailer brakes. If you have a 4 pin on your trailer and use a 7 pin adapter........... it will not work/disable the anti-reverse crap.

If you have basic skills it is possible to achieve the auto-disable even if your trailer doesn't have electric brakes.

You will have to swap you trailer harness over to a true seven pin harness (on a scale of 1-10, it's about a 2). You will need to purchase an electric trailer brake replacement magnet and bolt it to your trailer's frame and wire it into the new 7 pin harness.

I have a bike rack and had the same issue, my lift (modified electric trailer jack) already had a 7 pin harness etc............

7 pin trailer harness on Amazon for $20
Electric brake magnet for a 8" axle, I sourced from local trailer supply store for less than $20 (I don't remember the exact price)

Splice like wires from the 4 pin to the 7 pin and connect the "Blue" wire (Brake Controller output) to the magnet's wire. (on a scale of 1-10, it's about a 2)

Well the dealer was.NO help to me. My problem happened on my first use of my rear bumper bicycle carrier with the bike attached on my 2025 LC. I had driven around with just the carrier which is a center of bumper upright mount no problem. I am pulling out of the driveway at 0500 for Colorado from Alabama: Put it in reverse red lights started flashing, alarms sounded and the the brakes locked completely, Ithought I just ran over the neighbors DOG.. Well I had to get going on the first day I stopped at 2different Dealers I saw enroute: Neither service writer had ever heard of this problem. I have switched off all rear alarms and it still locks up. I have found on the screen camera view you can change the cone size down and it reduces the sensitivity. For the last 3 days I do everything possible not to back up. I also found you can override the brake locking if you keep light pressure on the brake pedal, but all the sound and light warnings still go off. When I get back home I am going to try sticking a false plug in the receiver and see if that. Helps. I can’t imagine the problems you trailer guys are having. To top off the first day of the trip Apple Car Play screen went completely black and lost map and Sirius for about 15 minutes, I thought I was really in trouble. Tried everything pulled over turned the car off a couple of times and rebooted the screen and the 3 rd time it came back up. No problems since.

I had the same issue, no bike and everything worked as it should with the nannies turned off, mounted the bike and thought I'd broken something........ LOL. I had read about a trailer emulator and then another post that the emulator wasn't very robust and had burned out on two people. I wasn't going to spend that amount of coin on a maybe. I had read in the manual ...... hook a trailer up and everything is disabled.

So I added some trailer lights (turns, running and brake) on to my bike rack. Kind of needed them any ways as the LC's tail lights were partially obscured with the bike mounted......... No Joy.

So I thought maybe it needed to see a draw on the reverse light circuit so the LC's trailer module could sense the additional draw (not realizing at the time most trailers don't have reverse lights) and disable the anti-backup crap. So I added a reverse light on the rack............ No Joy

So the only thing left that could be on a trailer was electric brakes. I purchased the cheapest replacement magnet the trailer supply place had, wired that to the "Blue" wire and much joy was had! Dash indicated trailer was attached etc........ put it in reverse and the anti-backup crap was disabled. Unplugged the 7 pin and the anti-backup crap was reengaged. Plugged the 7 pin back in and everything was disabled and I didn't have to press any other buttons!

It was a good day indeed!

There must be an easier way! Cant believe we have to deal with all this nanny nonsense. I pray that these nanny laws will be repealed soon, just like the "no spill" gas can spouts that caused 10x the pollution than full spill spouts do. Id love to see a pic of your bike rack 😁

You might be able rig up a 7 pin connector with just the blue wire run to a brake magnet attached to the LC's frame/receiver hitch and use your 4 pin trailer connector like normal. In theory it would work, but I've never tried it. If your 4 to 7 adapter comes apart, you can just run a single wire out of it or they sell a replacement 7 pin connector end.

One benefit of swapping over to a 7 pin pig tail, if your trailer has a 12v system, you could install a DC to DC charger and charge the battery while driving down the road utilizing the "Black" wire.

Like everyone else, my bike rack triggers all the alerts + brakes as well. I’ve found that turning off parking assist AND RCTA makes it so the brakes don’t lock up anymore.

The alarms still go off, but I don’t really care about that as long as I don’t get whiplash from the brakes.

Turn these two off and there will be no more issue with bike racks. They stay off unless you turn them back on .

THANK YOU GUYS !!! Your knowledge and experience is unmatched!! My next 6 days with my bicycle will be some much more pleasant. To the left of my knee I turned off the parking assist brake which stopped the horrible locking of brakes. As far as the sound I saw I could silence the horn on the screen by xing out the speaker image.

The only reason I added my electric brake magnet mod was, I'd forget to disable everything (between trips) and park somewhere and have a mini-panic when backing out of a parking space......... LOL

I have a KUAT Bicycle Rack, which is perfect to keep on my LandRover full time, which I purchased this past week. But after trying the various suggested configurations, it continues to SLAM my brake on at will as I backup. I am just at 5K and took it into the Apex NC Hendrick Toyota for service less than 2 weeks ago - so I guess it's time to go back and see how they suggest I prevent the whiplash effect.
