Due to some snow drifts on the Alma side of the pass, we decided to drive up to Mosquito Pass from the Leadville side and then head back down the way we came. OnX rates the trail 4/10 in difficulty, but I think it's definitely tougher. The road up the pass is rough from the start, but the last couple of switchbacks have some pretty challenging obstacles to clear in the LC. The final stretch to the top included a rocky shelf road that would've been nearly impossible to pass someone going in the opposite direction. Thankfully, we never ran into anyone going either way on this part. Going up and down the shelf road was some of the easiest driving, but definitely the most white-knuckle for me (especially down!) The LC rubbed a few times on the skids and touched the Slee rock sliders twice (just a little rubbing is ok, right?!) I spent most of the ride up and down in low 4, keeping the center diff locked. On the steepest and most technical stretch, I locked the rear diff just to be sure that everything went smoothly (and it did!) I engaged MTS on the steeper sections (rock) when the rear diff was unlocked. The power delivery and control was smooth and the LC behaved beautifully up and down. This was the first big challenge for us in our LC and a great learning experience for a newb. Now for the good stuff - some pics from the ride in no particular order! You'll see the two tallest peaks in Colorado in the background of some of the picks. Mt. Elbert (14,433') is on the left and Mt. Massive (14,429') is on the right.

Mt. Massive is off the right side of the LC in the background.

Mt. Massive is the snow covered peak in the center, but Mt. Elbert is the peak off to the left. Elbert is taller, but massive is much bigger.

A better pic to identify the peak of Elbert, which is at the far left. Massive is the snow covered monstrosity closer to the center.

Nothing to see here. (Checking an obstacle before using my skid plates and rock sliders to carefully clear it.)

Hard to tell, but this is the shelf road on the way down. It's a steep and very long drop off the side.

Awesome stuff! Pretty impressive for the LC. What size tires are you on?
33" tires. I have 17" Method 703 Beadgrip rims with 255/80R17 Falken Wildpeak AT4W tires. I aired down to 20 psi all around and the grip was fantastic. Here's a pic showing how the Falkens conformed to the rocks (look at front tire closely!)

Great photos! Have you ever done Imogene or Engineer Pass? I’d like to visit Colorado for some trail riding in the future, but want to gauge how difficult these would be for a beginner. Not looking to bang up my 250, and I’m on much smaller 245/70R18 tires.

No, I haven't done either Imogene or Engineer. I may take the LC on one of those in early August. I have no desire to bang up my LC, either. On the other hand, I put skid plates, rock sliders, and AT tires on for the express purpose of exploring some more remote areas. So, hitting the skid plates or sliders is sort of expected.

Fantastic photos and the truck is looking nice. I had Slee Slider Steps on my 4Runner and can’t say enough good things about them. I am likely to go back to the sliders you have once I tire of or if I need to replace my OEM sliders as I miss the step functionality for loading on a roof rack. How are you liking the pizza cutters? I assume this is sitting on the factory suspension setup but let me know if I am wrong. I wish these cars had a tad more ground clearance without having to lift them since they’ve got great articulation and are super capable out of the box.

The pizza cutters have been fantastic on and offroad. I've aired them down to 20 psi both on a trip over Medano Pass Primitive Road and to the top of Mosquito Pass. The trails had a variety of challenges - mud, slick rock, sand, and dirt. Not once did I have any issues with grip. The tires have performed well in all weather conditions on road - dry/wet/snow. I specifically chose the Falken over the KO3 because the KO3 doesn't have a pizza cutter in the 17" range. The KO3 may be the better tire in some areas, but it's not better if it's not available.

Yes, I'm running the factory suspension. I've been really pleased with the performance of the suspension offroad, especially on washboard. Based on my experience so far, I'm not sure if I'll make a change anytime soon. Getting another 1-2" of clearance in some areas would give me more confidence over some of the obstacles I've encountered, so that would be a primary driver. I'm in no rush and I'd probably go with Bilstein when it comes out.

I didn't mention this earlier, but I kept the SDM disconnected as much as possible offroad (and for the entire trip up to Mosquito Pass). I still haven't been in a situation where I've lost contact with any of my tires. One day...

I love Medano and have run it several times with my 4Runner but not yet with the LC. I feel like the Mosquito Pass route you did would have felt a little less harsh on the car if it had even just the 9.8” the 4Runner had but it’s so impressive and it looks like you’re well covered and protected from the bottom side. I’m on factory suspension as well and will likely keep it that way despite my wish for another 1”.

The road to Mosquito Pass was cluttered with lots of sharp rocks and a few challenging obstacles. Yes, more clearance would've made the obstacles easier, but it was a great learning experience for me. Deciphering the best place to put my tires to safely clear the obstacles was part of the enjoyable part of the experience for me. I just can't figure out how OnX rates the two trails as 4/10 in difficulty - I found Mosquito pass to be more challenging.
