Trailer hitch receiver cover problem

Love my LC so far, only 1000 k. Here is the question. I removed the cover for the trailer hitch receiver for the first time today, it seemed quite loose on the left side. I wanted to put a trailer hitch in, check the height etc. So I took the two tabs out of the bottom, followed the instructions on how to take it off, actually watched a Youtube video. Pretty easy to take off. However one of the tabs that holds it to the bumper was either already broken off/snapped and one other is just about to fall off. Went to the dealer figuring that a replacement under warranty would not be an issue. Surprise to me, the service manager tells me that if an item is "broken" Toyota will not replace or repair. Seems to me that the item is manufactured very poorly and likely a lot of owners have seen this happen. To replace it the cost is $318. Canadian dollars. plus the tax. Not really sure if it was delivered to me that way, broken, or if I did it in error pulling the cover off, I do not think so as it came off easily. Surprised at the problem and surprised at the dealers take on warranty. On a positive note I looked under the cargo area floor mat in the small storage space and to my surprise, again, there was the smaller bumper/reciever cover that fits into the bumper above the trailer hitch and does a good job covering some on the interior of the bumper. I really just want the other larger cover for when I sell the vehicle in the future, as it is part of the original equipment.

It just brakes very easily, I also broke mine while removing it to put on the smaller cover.

It unfortunately won’t be covered by the warranty since it was damaged by the owner.

After reading this, I was kind of scared of damaging my cover on removal. Zero issues. Popped the 2 bottom plastic clips with the corner of a credit card, and pulled them out with my fingernails. Took a look at the new short cover to get an idea of how it attaches, and carefully popped off the stock cover. Put on the new cover, reused the plastic clips, and installed a Toyota PT228-35960-HP Tow Hitch Plug in the hole. Easy peasy.

Not many people like the larger diaper. You can probably find someone who would sell you theirs for $20. I won’t cause I am kinda like you and want to have OEM in case I sell. Some people even sell their OEM rims! I probably wouldn’t buy a second hand vehicle if it didn’t have OEM rims. I would wonder what the hell they did to ruin rims. Start a ISO thread looking for the large diaper. Someone on here probably help you out.

If it is just the plastic snap tabs, they are bin parts and you can buy a pack on Amazon to keep handy when 15% inevitably break when you take off the ever increasing collection of covers, shrouds, and plastic trim parts. Also, invest in a basic trim tool kit for about $20 like this one that even comes with a variety of replacement tabs.

A great additional tool to have handy for trim and electrical connectors is a paint can opener, free from hardware or paint stores. They also open beer bottles! I used 2 of these to pull down overhead console for dash cam relocation.

$300?? I made the terrible mistake of not pulling mine far enough into the garage and the inside garage door handle mechanism gouged the heck out of the "diaper" hitch cover. I found a replacement online for about $170 (USD). Now, good as new!
