Probably a dumb question but if you replace your stock wheels with new wheels, how do you get the TPMS to work on the new wheels? Do you need to remove from stock wheels and put in new or is it better just to order new?

I manually deflated and broke the bead on my factory take-off 20” wheels/tires and removed the factory sensors and then installed them into the 18” wheels/tires I purchased from a forum member. He had had his sensors removed by his tire shop during his swap, so they came without. I’ll tell you it was a tough job and I needed to have them balanced anyway. In hindsight, I should have had the tire shop do it all!

But they registered almost immediately with the TPMS system and all good.

Page 561 in the owners manual discusses how to register new TPMS IDs. Though, I'll admit I'm also struggling with getting this procedure to work.

Thanks. I think I’ll let the tire shop handle too although I wanted to keep my set of 20s as a spare set. I guess if the quote I get to remove and then install in new wheels is around same cost as a new TPMS, I will get new ones…and then get them to make sure it’s working.

I’ll let the tire shop handle
Hopefully you have better luck than I did, Discount Tire couldn't do it with their tools. The guy tried 3 different things.

I’m going through a Toyota dealership. They’ve been super helpful and gave me a good deal if I bought my tires through them. He said they will swap them out for me and make sure working. We’ll see. Now I’m just waiting on Toytec. I’m ready to lose the soccer mom look of my LC with 20” wheels and get some A/T tires on it!

Hell yeah, I'd say the ride quality has improved as well. Also just as an update I did get my TMPS sensors to lock in this afternoon, so I'm happy now.

Any tips on how you got it to work?

Costco swapped the TPMS from all 5 factory wheels over to my new Trailhunter wheels. They tried resetting twice with their device, I tried twice via the drivers screen. Still have the light on.

I don’t know if it’s any help, but I swapped my falkens straight off my Tacoma with after market tpms sensors, all I did was try to add them using the settings accessed through the steering wheel… took probably a week, long enough that I had given up on it completely and then suddenly they synced and had no issues since. So my advice would be just be very patient. I don’t know what the magic was, maybe it’s a distance thing? Like 25 miles was what it needed? And being nowhere near any other sensors? No clue.

Thanks @JordanJ. I’ll be patient and hope they get picked up sooner rather than later. I guess I need to find an excuse to go for a long drive 🀣

If it’s any help at all, my routine at the time was start the β€œsync” at my local Sheetz, and drive roughly 50miles to work… they suddenly registered roughly halfway to work… but I had been trying about 4-5 days, but again, absolutely no clue was the special sauce was. My only thought is that most attempts were starting from my house, so that was in range of the Tacoma, so maybe that was what was glitching it out originally? And again, best guess I have is that there was like a required mileage that had to be obtained? And I did take it to a local tire place and they said they couldn’t get it. Maybe it’s just my sensors? No idea man, but good luck!

@EOD Guy thanks for the guide. If it doesn’t turn off on its own, I’ll print and share with the techs at Costco.

@JordanJ lll try resetting in an empty parking lot and go for a drive.

I’m planning to head to the snow this weekend and would like for the sensors to work for the long trip.

Its not very clear in the manual but you need to select register new tire set in the menus (you'll see where it tell you to drive but don't), you'll need to have the hybrid system on without driving for about 15 minutes, then it needs to turned off for about 30 minutes and then driven afterwards and then parked for a brief period and it will complete the cycle. Took mine about 20 miles of driving both times I did it. The manual also mentions that slightly curvy roads are preferred.

This certainly could be, and I just happened upon the circumstances naturally, good to know!

Not an easy process for me with two overactive kids 🀣. Thanks for sharing @Bad1975! I’ll see if I can make time for this with the kids going to sleep and go for drive afterwards tomorrow night.

Update on my situation....

Last night I followed the directions in the manual (thank you @Bad1975), went for a 30 minute drive and the light wouldn't turn off. I got to the screen (randomly) that shows the PSI for all 5 wheels. This screen was showing 35 PSI for all 5 wheels, but the light was still on and each tire had an orange circle around it.

Today, I took it back down to Costo. Showed the shop manager the directions @EOD Guy shared. The shop manager just looked at it and the directions from the manual and really didn't react to it. He gave me the run around about all kinds of stuff. He said let's go out and try to re-learn. Took out his scan tool, it beeped with all 5 wheels. "This beeping tells me the TPMS is working." Great, but the light is still on. He then proceeds with the reset process by attaching his OBD2 tool to the car, then goes around with his handheld, scaning the TPMS's until they all beep. He then tells me its working now because it shows the TPMS and the light is off. I told him it showed the PSI last night too and the light is still on. He was baffled and didn't know what to say. He then tells me his brother was master tech at a local Toyota dealer for 23 years. His brother once told him one trick to get the TPMS funcitoning properly is to inflate 5PSI over. He asks if I want to try it. I said yes. So he inflates all 4 corners to 38 PSI. He said drive it around and let's see where things go. As I'm driving home the orange cirlce around each tire slowly disappears. Starting with the passenger rear and then literlly disappering in a counter clockwise fashion. Well, we didn't infalte the spare to 38 PSI. Called him with the good news, he said come back so they can drop the spare and fill it to 38. Sometime in the next week I'm planning to go back.

TL;DR, inflating to 38 PSI can help with the computer re-learn the original TPMS when it is switched over from a different set of wheels.

The saga continues....

On wednesday the light came back on. Called Costco, they had no idea what to do next. I called America's Tire, shared my situation, they said to stop by and they'll reset it for free. I'll try this, if this doesn't work, off it goes to the dealer.

This past weekend, I took it on a 400 mile roundtrip excursion to Lake Tahoe. This didn't force the modules to"pick up the sensors".

The werid part is, the instrument cluster shows the PSI after driving for a bit, but all five wheels will have an orange circle around them. On the way back from Tahoe, all four circles except the spare went away.

This was the exact situation I was afraid of with switching wheels. Its been such a headache.

Buy new and make sure you get these tpms sensors they work excellent with toyota's finicky tpms system. Dont spend 90 plus per sensor buying toyotas sensors unless you like burning 3 c notes just to keep warm.

After about 1100 miles with the light on, I finally took it into the dealer to get addressed along with a few other things.

After the issues were resolved, the advisor called me and said costco was trying to reset the sensors to the threashold PSI instead of the actual. This was causing the light to stay on. But the notes from the tech doesn't match this (screenshot attached).

Nonetheless, I am excited the light is now off and I don't have to see it everytime I drive.
