Rear Window Locks?

Hey everyone! I am frequently driving with surfboards poking out the rear window, and was wondering if anyone has used these rear window strut locks? I was going to use them for shorter drives (20 mins or so, no highways) that would be moderately bumpy (dang you bad roads!). Curious if anyone has experience with these locks, or if they think it would potentially put the rear glass at risk of shattering.

Steel jab bolt tightened down of the strut.......... might bugger up the strut.

Might consider some pipe insulation cut to length and some Velcro straps to secure them to the struts.
