Part Identification

I’m new to my First Edition, and not mechanically inclined so bear with me. I am hearing a “motor running” sound from this part above spare tire underneath the truck. I tapped on the light gray cover looking piece and it stopped. Can someone tell me what this part is under here? And should it be humming/making noise while it’s been off and in my garage for many hours?

I’ve also had a pop up in dash saying Maintenance Required Soon but no other information. Not sure it’s related but wondering how I am supposed to know what maintenance is due with such a broad message?

I believe it has something to do with the evaporator with the gas tank. I read another post that commented on this noise after the car had been sitting for a while.

Hi CBSimmons2, Good morning.
After I had 5000 miles, I saw that maintenance Required advisory. Dealership rotated tires and topped off fluids. Oil Change is done at 10 k miles. Toyota calls this Express Service.

@cbsimmons - are you still hearing this? I've heard this twice, have tapped on the plastic housing, but it hasn't stopped (or I didn't wait long enough). I'm inclined to agree with gas evaporator, but will contact the dealership if there isn't something definitive on this thread or others.

That is the evap canister and will run the fan on it for a few minutes (10-20 minutes) to conduct a purge cycle about 5 hours after the last drive cycle.
