Do you use Tank Average?

For those concerned about fuel mileage, have you tried using the Tank Average setting? Personally, I find it more helpful (vs a more cumulative average) in trying to see if & why my mileage is improving.

Within My Settings in the multi-information display, you can change the type of fuel economy average that is displayed. I think there are 3 choices: average since last stop (ie a trip average), average since last fillup (ie a tank average), and average since the user last manually reset the calculation. Refer to pages 98 and 109 in the manual. I have a 1958.

The tank average (along with the range) will automatically reset as you're driving away from the pump. For a couple of tankfuls, I tested the average it by comparing to a manual calculation and found it to be sufficiently accurate.

I apologize, but I since learned that the setting is only available for 1958’s for some odd reason. Several members made that comment in another thread. The manual isn’t very clear on the point.

It is actually there. I installed a new fuel tank yesterday and needed to change this setting to help manage the now-incorrect miles to empty display.
It’s in settings>meter settings>fuel economy I believe. If not meter settings then vehicle settings.

Along with the miles to empty, I'll usually take note of the trip average when turning off the engine (since it's displayed on screen), and just mentally verify that it falls in line with my expectation. I do a particular 110 mile round trip each week, so I get a fairly decent amount of highway miles on a known route that I can use to gauge if things look "normal" or not.

Many of my "trips" are running errands, with a lot of stops, so it annoys me to see a trip economy of 7.5mpg or similarly dismal. The "average" setting is equally useless because, unless I write down numbers and reset it, I can't compare it. The "tank average" is what I use, but again, unless the number is written down, one has to rely on memory to compare.

I don't understand why Toyota cannot add fuel economy to the trip meters like other manufacturers. On other vehicles, I will use Trip 1 when I refill the tank (or a specific segment) and Trip 2 for the entire journey. That allows me to compare a segment of the trip to the average for the entire trip. But, hey, that's me.

Why would you want a simple button to reset like every other car that ever existed when instead you can just simply:

Push left or right. wait, nothing is happening. oh ok there's a pop up you need to clear first. clear that pop up notice. now left to switch to the screen with your trip odometer widget. nope, not on this screen, should have gone right instead, oh well, left again. There it is, now just hold in OK for a few seconds. Now ok again, no wait, left.. now hold in return, or is it ok? oh crap we changed the widget. back to center... hold in ok. now left or right. careful... careful.. now only push OK for a few seconds. DONE.

Right? At least they didn’t let the summer intern design the transmission/ECU behavior like they did on the 5th Gen 4Runner.
