So today for the first time I put the truck into 4WD low. Put it in park and changed the setting. It beeped the whole time. Does anyone know why?

In my 4runners I could be rolling shift into Neutral and then put it in low. Can you be moving I have not tried it yet?
To be safe and not damage the transmission (gears), the vehicle should be stopped and shifted to neutral before 4Low.

what year /gen of your 4Runners ?

About two weeks after I bought my 1958 LC, I took it off road to test the 4WD low function. It had about 350 miles on the odometer. It worked fine in 4WD Low, but when I tried to shift it back into 4WD high, no dice. It was stuck in 4WD low, even when I did exactly what the manual says to do (see above post). Obviously I could not drive it on the pavement to take it back to the dealership, so I got AAA (I have always gotten my money's worth from my AAA membership) to take it on a flatbed wrecker to the dealer. It took the dealer about 5 minutes to figure out that the manual was wrong. They shifted it into Park and then it went right back to 4WD high. I said that the manual said to put it in "N" to shift back and they said, "just put it into "P" to shift back", which is what they did. I had even tried going into reverse, as stated in the manual, but that didn't work either. Who knew?

Thanks for this thread. I shifted into 4 Low yesterday for the first time just
to try it. beepbeepbeep Never would have thought that it HAD to be in N.

Must be in Neutral. Also, when locking the rear differential (also Neutral) it can take a few feet to get everything to align and lock.

Why not?

Since we have a centre diff, (unlocked) there shouldn't be an issue driving on pavement. Am I wrong?
Obviously, being limited to a very slow speed in traffic which in itself would pose risks...

Technically for the Land Cruiser, you could and it would not pose a problem since 4LO does NOT lock the center differential. With the gear reduction it will be a slow noisy trip (not sure how fast 4LO tops out at).

IMO the setup with all the buttons and toggles are more complicated than it really should be and instead have the toggle with 3 options. 4HI for most driving. 4HI w/ Center Lock for mild off road. 4LO locks everything.
