Does anyone have pictures of the 285/70/r18 mounted in the spare location?

I have seen 275/70/r18 mounted it fits barely.

I have seen 285/75/r18 mounted and hangs down really low.

I am deciding between 285/70/18 and 275/70/18.

275/70/18 might be the largest size for decent spare location fit.

It will not fit, although one YT video jammed it in there and secured it without seating it fully up against the 'ceiling' (then bitched about how low the spare hangs down, if I recall). A 275/70R18 will (barely) fit.

[EDIT: I chose to roll the dice and put a 275 for spare... hopefully if I get a flat the 285s will be worn down enough that it won't matter]

Is there a youtube video of someone doing this? curious to know how feasible a 275 spare is with 285's on an AWD vehicle.

Here is the video of 285/75/18 these are bigger than 285/70 .. and they just ram the tire up there and doesn’t seat all the way. What I am seeing is 275/70/18 is the biggest spare fully seated in the spare location without major modifications.

Running a 275 as a spare to a 285 set is an option but not ideal, but I am sure he knows the risks.

I meant someone driving on a 275 spare with all other tires at 285. if it is really ok to drive an AWD car for 10 or 20 miles like that to a tire shop that's what I might do. But I feel like that could bust the drive train.

The entire purpose of a differential is to allow each axle to turn at different speeds. Don't lock anything and keep speeds reasonable, and it will not harm anything.

I talked with my offroad shop in detail about it, and it doesn't sound like a big concern for the few miles it might be driven after a flat.

Useful to use this site:

…to compare diameters and revolutions per mile on various tire sizes. That’s the only relevant measurement on a spare tire; width doesn’t matter.

What is everyone's thoughts on running a spare with the same diameter but a smaller width? Wouldn't that negate any potential issues with the AWD system while also maximizing ground clearance underneath the spare?

I tried to do this with our raised jeep since a 35Ă—12.5 weighs nearly 100lb and is hanging high on the tailgate, i had to use a transmission jack and cribbing just to mount it and im not exactly weak. I could not find a "donut" tire in the 35" range anywhere, so i just pray i never have to use it. I carry fixaflat and plugs too.

If you find one please let me know.

You could always try a full size spare, let all the air out then ratchet strap it (within reason, dont kill it) to conform to spare tire bay. Assuming you would carry a compressor of course. This is starting to sound like a really bad idea...

Thinner tire for a spare is fine just keep in mind the obvious effects on handling dynamics.

Will some tire manufacturer please offer 35" collapsible donut spares please?

I just don't think the size difference is worth all the angst and issues. I don't want to hang a spare off my bumper or tailgate as it ended up being a pain in the backside on my Jeeps. I just went 275/70/R18's and everything fits, no rubbing or trimming of plastic, the spare is seated properly and the Toyo's are far better then the 20" tires is came with. Boom..I was done there with tires. To each their own just enjoy your ride and make it how you want.

I’m not going to pretend to know enough about all this tire size magic, all I can say is I’m running 285 70/17 falkens on a zero offset and my spare does not fit snug, it hangs just a little bit but not enough for concern… at least for me.
